Under Title 42, United States Code,
Section 3732, the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) is directed to
collect and analyze statistical information concerning the
operation of the criminal justice system at the federal, state and
local levels. The annual P&P surveys provide national and
state-level data about offenders under community supervision, a
core component of BJS' collections on the criminal justice
system.

Overall, the number of
respondents receiving the CJ-8A (Short Form) was increased from 120
to 160 respondents, with a corresponding decrease in the number of
respondents who are being sent the Annual Probation, CJ-8 (Long
Form).
