The National Survey on Recreation and
the Environment (NSRE) uses random-digit-dialing telephone sampling
to interview Americans age 16 and older. The primary purpose is to
learn about the outdoor recreation activities of the American
public. Individuals are asked about their participation in 81
specific recreation activities. To assist the public land manager
in the formulation of management plans for providing recreation
opportunities, various characteristics of the participants in
individual activities and groups of activities are tabulated. These
characteristics include distributions by age, race, sex, income,
education, size of household, and region of the country. NSRE
results provide detailed tables that show rates of participation in
individual activities and groups of activities which are necessary
to make planning decisions. This survey will be the next in the
series of national surveys that was started in 1960 by the Outdoor
Recreation Resources Review Commission (ORRRC).
