Assent to Participate in the National Longitudinal
Survey of Youth 2027 (NLSY27) Research Panel
Key Information About the Survey
• The purpose of this survey is to learn about youths’ experiences as they move from school to
work and into adulthood.
• You were randomly selected to participate in the survey.
• Participating in the survey is voluntary. Your parent (or guardian) gave us permission for you
to participate in this survey. We are now asking you if you would like to participate.
• Participation will involve: (1) completing the survey today, and (2) completing follow-up
surveys or other activities every 1-2 years after that. Each time we contact you, you will have
the choice of whether you want to participate or not.
• The questions on this survey cover a variety of topics, including your education, work
experience, income, health, family life, and risky behaviors—including criminal activity.
• You will receive [$50/$75] for completing the survey.
• As required by law, the information you provide will be kept confidential. All survey data are
stored in secure Bureau of Labor Statistics information systems.
• This form explains more about the survey to help you decide if you want to participate.

What is the purpose of this form?
Your parent (or guardian) gave us permission for you to participate in the National Longitudinal Survey
of Youth 2027 (NLSY27) Research Panel. We are now asking you to participate. This form tells you
about the survey, including what information is collected and how it will be kept safe.

What is the NLSY27 Research Panel?
The NLSY27 Research Panel is a federal survey that is authorized under Title 29, Section 2, of the
United States Code. It is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS)
and is being conducted by RTI International (RTI). The survey will help us learn how youth aged 11-17
experience work throughout their lives.
BLS has been doing surveys like this for over 50 years. These surveys begin by talking to a group of
youth and their parents (or guardians) and then continue to do follow-up interviews with the youth as
they get older.
The last time we began a survey like this one was in 1997. The teens that participated in that survey
have been contacted every couple of years to complete a survey and are now in their 40s. Leaders
need to hear from youth your age so they can understand how your experiences with family,
schooling, technology, and work may differ from theirs, and how all this will affect your life.

How was I selected to participate?
Your household is one of 13,380 households that were randomly selected to participate and you will
represent youth ages 11-17 across the United States. Random selection means that all youth aged 11-17
had a chance of being chosen to participate.

Will I receive anything for participating?
There are no direct benefits of participating in this survey. However, we want to thank you for your
participation, so you will receive [$50/$75] for completing the first survey. You will also receive 5 hours
of community service credit from BLS.

What will happen during the survey?
We will ask you to complete a survey at your home which lasts about 1-1.5 hours.
• You will answer questions either by talking with an interviewer or entering your responses
on a tablet.
• The survey asks questions about topics like your school, work experience, health, criminal
activity, family, friends, and work.
• Some of these questions might be personal. You may skip any question you do not want
to answer, and you may stop the interview at any time.
We will also collect information on how to reach you so we can contact you in the future about the
survey.

Is this the only time I will be asked to participate in the survey?
No. The survey will follow the same group of youth and ask them questions throughout their life to
learn how their lives change. After the first interview, we will contact you every 1-2 years and ask you
to participate in further surveys for the NLSY27 Research Panel. Each time we have a follow-up survey,
we will ask again for your permission.

Do I have to participate?
No, participation is voluntary. We are only asking you to participate in this current survey.

Will other people find out about what I say?
No, what you tell us will not be shared with your family, friends, or school. Your privacy is very
important to us. We are required by federal law to keep your answers confidential. Confidential means
that your name will never be connected to the answers you provide. Your data will be combined
with the answers from others who participate. These combined answers will not include your name.
In accordance with the Privacy Act, Confidential Information Protection and Statistical Efficiency
Act (44 U.S.C. 3572), and other applicable federal laws, your individual responses will never be
disclosed in an identifiable form without your consent. There are two exceptions to our promise of
confidentiality: (1) if you tell the interviewer that you plan to seriously harm yourself or others, the
interviewer must share that information with your parent (guardian) and report to BLS NLSY27 staff,
and (2) if the interviewer suspects abuse or neglect of a child or adult, they are required to follow
laws for reporting child and adult abuse and will report that information to the BLS NLSY27 staff.

How will the information I share be used?
BLS and RTI will use data from this survey to conduct research to improve the NLSY27.

Are there any risks to participating?
There are no physical risks involved in participating in this survey. It is possible that you could find
some of the interview questions personal, which could make you uncomfortable or upset. If so, you
may choose not to answer any question and you may stop participating at any time. There is also a
small risk of someone outside the research team getting access to your information, but we have
strong procedures and legal protections in place to help prevent that from happening.

¿Qué es el Panel de Investigación Científica de la Encuesta Nacional Longitudinal de Jóvenes
de 2027?
El Panel de Investigación Científica de la Encuesta Nacional Longitudinal de Jóvenes de 2027 es una encuesta
federal, autorizada en virtud de la Sección 2 del Título 29 del Código de los Estados Unidos. La encuesta está
patrocinada por la Oficina de Estadísticas Laborales (BLS, por sus siglas en inglés) del Departamento de Trabajo

BLS lleva más de 50 años realizando encuestas de este tipo. Estas encuestas comienzan hablando con un grupo
de jóvenes y sus padres/madres (o cuidadores(as)) y luego continúan con entrevistas de seguimiento a medida
que los jóvenes crecen.
La última vez que iniciamos una encuesta como esta fue en 1997. Los(as) adolescentes que tomaron parte en
ese momento fueron contactados cada dos años para completar una encuesta y ahora tienen más de 40 años.
Los líderes necesitan escuchar a jóvenes de tu edad para que puedan entender cómo tus experiencias con la
familia, la escuela, la tecnología y el trabajo pueden diferir de las que tuvieron ellos, y cómo todo esto afectará
tu vida.

¿Cómo fui seleccionado(a) para tomar parte?
Tu hogar es uno de los 13,380 hogares seleccionados(as) al azar para participar y representarás a jóvenes de
entre 11 y 17 años de todo los Estados Unidos. La selección aleatoria significa que todos los jóvenes de entre 11 y
17 años tuvieron la oportunidad de ser elegidos para tomar parte.

¿Recibiré algo por tomar parte?
No hay beneficios directos por tomar parte en esta encuesta. Sin embargo, queremos agradecerte por tu

crédito de servicio comunitario de BLS.

¿Qué ocurrirá durante la encuesta?

desees responder, y puedes detener la entrevista en cualquier momento.
También recopilaremos información sobre cómo ponernos en contacto contigo para que podamos contactarte
en el futuro con respecto a la encuesta.

¿Es la única vez que se me pedirá que tome parte en la encuesta?
No. La encuesta hace un seguimiento del mismo grupo de jóvenes y les hacen preguntas a lo largo de los años
para saber cómo cambia su vida. Después de la primera entrevista, nos pondremos en contacto contigo cada
1 o 2 años para pedirte que participes en otras encuestas del Panel de Investigación Científica de NLSY27.

¿Tengo que tomar parte?
No, tomar parte es voluntario. Solo te estamos pidiendo que tomes parte en la presente encuesta.

¿Se enterarán otras personas de lo que digo?
No, no compartiremos nada de lo que nos diga con su familia, amistades o escuela. Tu privacidad es
muy importante para nosotros. La ley federal nos exige mantener la confidencialidad de tus respuestas.
“Confidencialidad” significa que tu nombre nunca se relacionará con las respuestas que proporcione. Tus
datos se combinarán con las respuestas de otras personas que tomen parte. Estas respuestas combinadas
no incluirán tu nombre. De acuerdo con la Ley de Privacidad, la Ley de Protección de Información
