NLSY Face-to-Face Interviewer Phone Call Talking Points

Interviewers should not reach out to youth directly. All calls are made to parents or caregivers.

Cater conversation to the next step needed as shown below.

Complete Household Screener

• Ask to schedule a time to visit P/C (identified in Eligibility Screener) to ask a few
  “questions to confirm information about members of your household.”

  • Before you call, look at preferred days and times given in Eligibility Screener

  • Have suggested days and times available to offer

• Mention

  • $5 incentive for answering a few more questions/confirming information

  • Takes about 10 minutes to complete

  • $50 incentive when eligible household members complete interviews

• Do not…

  • Use the terms “screening” or “screener”

  • Ask Household Screener questions over the phone

Complete Youth Interview

• Ask to schedule a time to visit when the P/C (identified in Household Screener) and at least one Youth (identified in Household Screener) is available.

  • Before you call, look at preferred days and times given in Household Screener

  • Have suggested days and times available to offer

• Mention

  • Incentive amount when eligible household members complete interviews

  • Interview takes about 1-1.5 hours

  • Parent/Legal Guardian will need to provide permission for youth and be in the home during the youth interview.

  • Parents/Caregivers can complete the survey on your laptop while you interview the youth on your tablet.

Complete Parent Interview (Youth has already completed their interview)

• If selected P/C has been sent a web survey and it is still pending after 10 days

  • Mention a survey link has been sent but has not been completed

  • Ask if they have any technical issues or questions you can answer

• Mention

  • $50 incentive when eligible P/C completes interview

  • If multiple youth were selected, they qualify for an extra $25 for each additional youth

  • Interview takes about 1 hour

  • Parents can complete the survey online (if youth has already completed their interview).
