The collection of information is used by FRA and State Motive, Power, and Equipment (MP&E) inspectors to conduct more thorough, more effective, and more efficient sample car inspections of the various types of new rail freight cars (as well as retrofit re-manufactured freight cars and freight cars currently in use) constructed at manufacturing facilities in this country. Forms FRA F 6180.161(a-k) are being used to reduce burden on respondents while also facilitating a comprehensive and complete inspection. In particular, these forms provide a standardized format that can be used by FRA inspectors and customers to conduct sample car inspections for various new types of cars.
