Moderator’s Guide: Evaluating WPS Agricultural Pesticide Safety Information Poster

The moderator will work with each participant to fill out a demographic information and consent form.

The EPA and two universities are developing a poster that explains how people who work in agriculture can limit their exposure to pesticides and protect their health. The purpose of this session is to see if agricultural employees understand the information we intend to convey on the poster.

Pesticide Safety Information Poster Project

Thank you for volunteering your time to be a participant in our study!

The purpose of this interview is for us to collect feedback on our newest pesticide safety poster for agricultural workers. The poster will be displayed on most agricultural establishments across the United States, and can greatly reduce the risks from pesticides for farmworkers and their families. As an adult participant, who has identified as a worker in an agricultural setting where pesticides are handled by either yourself or someone else at your worksite, your input is very valuable! The information we collect will help us create a relevant and easily readable poster. Your perspective is important to us and will play a critical role in helping keep you, your family, friends, and coworkers safe.

Next, participants will be asked to look at the pesticide safety poster without text for 1-3 mins. Their interview will be regarding two versions of the poster: one with text, one without text. Interview questions will be identical for both versions.

Questions are to be asked in order:

A. “Please take 1-3 minutes to look over the poster.” (Show the poster without text.)

1. After you have given them time ask the group:

What are your initial impressions of this poster?

2. Next, ask participants to create a caption for each image. Go through each image with them and ask:

What is this image communicating to you?

3. Next, ask participants about the poster:

a) Is there anything confusing in this poster/image? If yes, what might make it clearer/what would you change?

b) Does anything in this poster bother you or offend you?

c) When you look at the poster, can you personally identify with it? Does it accurately represent you?

d) Is there anything that makes you not want to look at the poster?

e) After looking at this poster and talking about it, does it change how you would work with or around pesticides? If so, what? If not, why not?

f) Did you learn anything new from this poster? If so, what?

B. “Please take 1-3 minutes to look over the poster.” (Show the poster that has text.)

From what you see on the poster, can you tell me:

• Where are some places that you may come in contact with pesticides at work?

• What are some ways pesticides may come in contact with your skin or body?

• When should you wash your hands at your workplace? Before what activities?

• What types of clothing should be worn when working with pesticides?

• What should be done with the clothes you wear to work each day?

• How should your work clothes be washed?

• After showering with soap and water, and shampooing hair, is it okay to put the dirty clothes back on?

• What do signs in treated areas mean?

• What should you do if pesticides are spilled or sprayed on your body?

• When should you seek immediate medical attention?

• What should you do if you have been poisoned, injured, or made ill by pesticides?

• Please locate the contact information for a local medical care facility.

• Please locate the contact information for the pesticide regulatory agency.

• If you believe you have been poisoned, injured, or made ill by pesticides, what should you do?
