FOCUS GROUP QUESTIONS

As we noted earlier, we’re hoping to learn about how people are involved in politics and their opinions of various kinds of political activities. Learning about your and others’ opinions will help us develop a questionnaire for a large survey we will be conducting.

1. I’d like to start the discussion by hearing your opinions about political activity.

  • What does it mean to be politically active in Yemen?

  • Who has the most influence over your political views?

  • If you are angry by government actions, what are some of the things you might consider doing to express this anger? Enact change?

  • How far is it acceptable to go to enact change?

  • What are some of the forms of protest or engagement that you find particularly disturbing or unacceptable? Why?

2. Beyond political activity, what are some social and religious organizations that individuals in Yemen belong to? How do these organizations try to enact change? Do you find any of these activities particularly disturbing or unacceptable? Why?

3. Are there other ways in which you, your family and/or acquaintances have tried to enact political, social or religious change? What are these? Were they effective?

4. Is there something we didn’t cover that you think we should have included in this discussion of political, social or religious change in Yemen? If you have any other thoughts or comments please feel free to talk to us after the group discussion.

That’s the end of my questions. Thanks very much for taking part in this discussion today; it was very helpful to us.
