Criminal Records affect an
individual's ability to obtain academic degrees, find work, and
secure affordable housing. Re-entry strategies too often do not
include legal services and the legal aid community often lacks
resources to independently address expungement and collateral
consequences. As a response, the Department of Housing and Urban
Development (HUD) and the Department of Justice (DOJ) are joining
forces to expand the opportunities of those with convictions. This
therefore enables those with criminal records to overcome chief
collateral consequences such as, barriers to housing, education,
employment, health care, and insurance as well as serious
immigration consequences. The aforementioned are chief among the
tangible collateral consequence.
