TITLE OF INFORMATION COLLECTION: Shoreline Change Workshop of 2012: Perspectives on the Great Lakes

PURPOSE: To obtain input on Great Lakes shoreline change issues to be discussed at the above-mentioned workshop. NOAA Coastal Service Center’s (CSC’s) Coastal Storms Program (CSP) is a nationwide effort to make communities safer by reducing the negative impacts caused by coastal storms. CSP provides funding for projects in selected regions to develop new data and tools, institute public outreach strategies, and establish new partnerships. Each project lasts approximately 3-5 years and brings together groups across multiple sectors. Each region is affected by different hazards and complications, so each region requires its own individually- tailored set of tools and services. To date, project areas include Northeast Florida, Pacific Northwest, Southern California, Gulf of Mexico, Pacific Islands, and now the Great Lakes.

The Great Lakes basin is home to about 10 percent of the U.S. population. Many stressors, such as beach hazards and storm water pollution from more severe and frequent storms, make protecting these natural resources and coastal communities a unique challenge. As a result, CSP plans to conduct a workshop to identify and prioritize the region’s shoreline hazard management requirements and develop some consensus on the best allocation of federal resources for Great Lakes shoreline projects.

DESCRIPTION OF RESPONDENTS: Great Lakes shoreline change researchers, resource managers, and related practitioners who are familiar with the subject of the upcoming workshop.

The selection of your targeted respondents

  1. Do you have a customer list or something similar that defines the universe of potential respondents and do you have a sampling plan for selecting from this universe?

[ ] Yes [X] No

If the answer is yes, please provide a description of both below (or attach the sampling plan)? If the answer is no, please provide a description of how you plan to identify your potential group of respondents and how you will select them?

With assistance from the Shoreline Change Workshop Steering Committee, NOAA’s CSP will develop a list of approximately 100 shoreline management practitioners (public and private sector) who have an interest in Great Lakes shoreline management issues. Together, NOAA’s CSP and the Steering Committee have contact information for stakeholders representing various geographical areas within the Great Lakes region and various sectors (federal, regional, state, and local agencies, non-profit organizations, academic institutions). While we will strive to develop a sample that is inclusive of these geographical areas and sectors, the sample is not intended to be a statistically representative sample of the complete universe of potential respondents.
