The purpose of this fishery management
plan (FMP) is to develop a regional permitting process for
regulating and promoting environmentally sound and economically
sustainable aquaculture in the Gulf of Mexico (Gulf) exclusive
economic zone (EEZ). If the rule (RIN 0648-AS65, "Fishery
Management Plan for Regulating Offshore Marine Aquaculture in the
Gulf of Mexico") is approved and implemented, up to 20 offshore
aquaculture operations would be permitted in the Gulf over a 10
year period, with an estimated annual production of up to 64
million pounds. Establishing such a process requires the Council to
develop an FMP for aquaculture.
