A cadia National Park

2013 Carriage Road Monitoring Survey

OMB Number: 1024-0224 Expires 8-31-2014

Topic Area 3: Trip Behaviors – responses to this question will allow us to sort visitors into either the high use zone or the low use zone established for the carriage roads. Different standards exist for the number of behaviors in each zone. The respondent will use a map provided by the interviewer to indicate the route(s) taken during their visit.

1. What was your route on the carriage roads today? Please use the intersection numbers on the map to trace your route. [THE RESPONDENT WILL BE ShowN carriage road system map with numbered intersection – PROVIDED in the visitor center’s handout].

_______ _______ _______ _______ _______ _______ _______ _______

Topic Area 5: Crowding and Visitor Experiences - responses to this question will allow us to calculate the average number of occurrences for each behavior in each zone to compare with established standards and past monitoring efforts.

2. Please indicate the approximate number of times you experienced the following behaviors on your visit to the carriage roads today. Please enter a number in each blank. If you did not experience a particular behavior today, please enter zero.

Bicycles startling you by passing from behind without warning ______

Bicycles traveling at excessive speeds ______

Dogs off leash ______

Visitors obstructing or blocking carriage roads ______

Topic Area 2: Trip Behaviors – responses to this question will allow us to calculate the average length of a carriage road visit for the entire sample. This information will be used to verify that the average trip is still about two hours.

3. How long (hours and minutes) was your trip on the carriage roads today?

_______ Hours ________ Minutes

Topic Area 3: Trip Behavior - this question will allow us to compare the various user types to previous research to show any change in user populations.

4. Which of the following was your primary activity on the carriage roads today? Circle one.

Biking Walking Running Horseback riding

Topic Area 1: Respondent Characteristics and Knowledge – this question to determine if visitors and residents have different standards for the number of acceptable behaviors at a single location.

5. Which of the following best describes your residency on Mount Desert Island? Check one.

____ Permanent Resident

____ Summer Resident (returning annually for 1-6 months)

____ Not a Resident

Topic Area 3: Trip Behaviors - this question will let us know how many carriage road visitors are using the new Island Explorer bus to access the carriage roads. This is important because use of the bus may change the locations used to access the carriage roads or the way carriage roads are used (for example, more one-way trips may take place).

6. Did you use the Island Explorer Bus to reach or leave the carriage roads today? Circle one.

Yes No

Topic Area 3: Trip Behaviors - this question will allow us to track the number of one way trips on the carriage roads. Too many one-way trips would invalidate the current simulation model, which was built based on the round trips from the same point.

7. Did you enter at one carriage road access location and leave at a different location? Circle one.

Yes No

Thank you for your help.
