Hello!

Rush National Historical Park, Seattle Unit. Klondike and its sister parks -- Mount
Rainier National Park, North Cascades National Park, and Olympic National Park -- are
increasing their outreach efforts with local youth organizations. We’d like to learn more
about your organization, and find out what kinds of programs and topics we could offer
to groups like yours.
To gather this information, we’d like to invite you or a representative of your
organization to a group discussion about these issues. It will take place at

Focus Group Script for Group Leaders
Hello, my name is [MODERATOR), I work for the Park Studies Unit at the University of Idaho.
We’re helping Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park- Seattle Unit to conduct a study on
the how Klondike and its sister parks (Mount Rainer National Park, Olympic National Park, and
North Cascades National Park) can best serve Seattle-area youth through outreach programs.
You were invited to this discussion session because of your expertise and experience in youth
organizations. With your input, the National Park Service hopes to create high-quality programs
to involve young people in national parks of the Pacific Northwest.
This discussion group has been approved by the Office of Management and Budget in
compliance with the Paperwork Reduction Act. The Office of Management and Budget control
number and expiration date are available at your request.
Before we begin, I want to tell you that the information that we obtain here will only be used for
the purposes of this study. I also want to inform you that we will be recording the discussion.
The conversation will be transcribed to create a summary of this session. These documents will
be kept in a locked cabinet; we will not share the recording with anyone. We not use your real
names in transcript and the summary document, so that it will not reveal anyone’s identity.
Your comments will remain anonymous and your participation is completely voluntary.
This focus group will take a about 90 minutes to complete. During this time we
invite you to the refreshment assortment on that table. The restrooms are located at [location].
We’d like to hear everything you have to say, so I’ll ask you to speak one at a time. If you have
something to share while someone else is speaking please raise your hand. I will make time for
you to share when the person finishes. Finally, there are no right or wrong answers. All of your

today. I will go around the room to make sure everyone has a copy of the consent form with your
parents’ signature. The information that we gathter here is anonymous and will not be used for
any other purpose than to inform the park managers about youth oriented programs. I also want to let
you know that we are recording the discussion today. The conversation will be transcribed later to
create a summary of this session. These documents will be kept in a locked cabinet; we do not share

6. Did you know that there are four national parks within 125 miles of Seattle:
Klondike Gold Rush National Historic Site (right here in Seattle), Mount Rainier National Park,
North Cascades National Park, and Olympic National Park. These parks are run by the
National Park Service. Is there anything about any of these parks that you would like to know
about?
7.Did you know that the National Park Service oversees 392 public use areas, including parks like
Yellowstone, historic sites like Abraham Lincoln’s home, and recreation areas like Lake Roosevelt
(or Coulee Dam)? Have you ever visited a national park? if so where did you visit? what did you
do when you were there?
8. Is there anything about any Park managed by the National Park Service that you would like to
know?

As a part of the National Park Service’s efforts to provide appropriate and beneficial outreach programs
for Seattle’s youth, we will be holding group discussions with young people participating in various youth
organizations in the Seattle area.
These discussions are designed to learn about the types of programs, activities and topics that would
interest and benefit young people. The group discussions are voluntary. All of the information
collected for the study will be kept strictly confidential and only used for the purposes of the study.
The group discussions were developed and will be conducted by the University of Idaho’s Visitor
Services Project in conjunction with Klondike Gold Rush National Historic Site, Seattle Unit.
We believe that the study will provide valuable information for our outreach program and will help in our
ongoing efforts to provide Seattle-area youth with rewarding experiences in their National Parks.
