Appendix B
Proposed Changes to NSCAW II Wave 3 Instruments
Section/Assessment Changes
Instrument
Questionnaire
for Identifying
Children with
Chronic
Conditions –
Revised
(QuICCC-R)
Vineland
Socialization
Subscale
Issues
The current Caregiver instrument does not include all items. Missing stem questions include:
• Does [child] take medicine or drugs prescribed by a doctor other than regular vitamins?
• Has a doctor told you that [child] needs to follow a special diet or avoid certain foods?
• Does [child] go to a medical doctor or specialist on a regular basis?
• Does [child] go to a counselor, psychiatrist, psychologist, or social worker on a regular
basis?
Add these questions to Wave 3 to have the complete QuICCC-R instrument and to allow
analysts to calculate scale scores.
The current Caregiver instrument includes the Vineland Socialization subscale asking about
the behaviors of youth 13 to 18 years old; N=700. During analysis, we learned that between
2/3 and ½ of the subsample had a score of 0 in outdated items, as a consequence 42.4% were
classified as having very low socialization skills (-2 SD). Six out of 15 items describe social
practices that are outdated (e.g. using the radio for news, etc).
Delete the Socialization Subscale questions for ages 13-18 from the Wave 3 instrument.

TYN
1 YES
2 NO
Currently, if the child reports not having sex in the past 12 months (Y_SX26a =
No), the respondent is skipped out of the remainder of the SX section. This
should be changed so that if Y_SX26a = ‘No’, then all of the subsequent
questions in the SX section be administered except for question Y_SX27a,
which should be skipped.
Logic after:
IF Y_SX26a = 2 GO TO SXEND
Logic before:
IF R IS MALE fill: gotten someone pregnant; IF R
IS FEMALE fill: been pregnant
Add item to Sexual Activity (SX) module that asks
