TITLE OF CONTEST: Children’s Carbon Monoxide Safety Poster Contest

DESCRIPTION OF THIS SPECIFIC COLLECTION

  1. Basic contest description:

A nationwide contest for children in grades 6, 7, and 8 to raise awareness of the dangers of carbon monoxide (CO). Children will create an original poster illustrating CO dangers.


  1. Objective for the contest:

Raise awareness of CO dangers and the steps the public can take to protect against those dangers.


  1. Data elements to be collected:

For the child/contestant: first and last name, grade level in school, state of residence. If the child wins a prize, CPSC will collect the child’s social security number to process payment and to prepare necessary IRS Form 1099.

For the parent/guardian: first and last name, mailing address, phone number and email address.


  1. Dates for the contest:

July 14, 2014 through February 27, 2015.


  1. Eligible entrants/participants:

Children in grades 6, 7, and 8.


  1. Number of winners expected:

10 individual prize winners (one child can win multiple prizes).

Three prize winners in each of grade 6, 7, and 8. One prize winner chosen by a public vote on CPSC’s website. One grand prize winner chosen from the 10 finalists, including the grade level winners and the public vote winner.


  1. Selection criteria for winner:

  • CO safety message clarity;

  • Visual appeal;

  • Design originality.


  1. Prize” or planned recognition for winner:

  • Three 6th grade winners: $500.00 each.

  • Three 7th grade winners: $500.00 each.

  • Three 8th grade winners: $500.00 each.

  • One winner chosen by public vote on CPSC’s website: $500.00.

  • One grand prize winner chosen from among the 10 finalists: $1,000.00.

  • One child can win multiple prizes, including the winner selected by public vote.
