Abstract: This study seeks to develop a comprehensive understanding of the long term impacts of the research training programs of the John E. Fogarty International Center (FIC) at partner institutions, including both proximate effects (e.g. professional development and career paths of individual trainees) and broader effects upon organizational capacity, knowledge production, and policy development. An additional goal is to develop and test a set of research methods for assessing long term impacts of research training programs. The data collection consists of a series of ten case studies of impacts at particular low- and middle-income country institutions. It is anticipated that this study will be used by FIC to inform its understanding of the potential long term impacts of its investments in research capacity building and the mechanisms through which these impacts occur. Such knowledge will likely be useful for strategic planning at the Center level as well as to guide planning and management of ongoing programs.
