We have approved
the Fatality/Catastrophe Reporting requirement for an additional
year, in light of the ongoing interagency initiatives on
occupational injury fatalities discussed in the 9/6/88
Eisenberg/Mellinger memo (included in this package). No later than
July 1989, BLS and OSHA shall jointly brief OMB on the status of
the interagency coordination effort and the potential role of OSHA
fatality reports and investigations in achieving a comprehensive
count and description of occupational traumatic deaths. As a second
condition of clearance, OSHA shall as soon as practicable ensure
that copies of all fatality/catastrophe reports and subsequent
investigation reports of deaths and catastrophes are henceforth
filed ina timely manner with OSHA's Directorate for Policy in
Washington, so that the data are centrally located and available.
The agency shall submit a copy to this Office of the instructions
to field offices implementing this requirement when the instruction
is disseminated.
