Is everyone seated one seat apart?
Has everyone checked-in at the desk outside this room? This is how we document that you attended the briefing session.
Does everyone have a survey, a handout, and an envelope? (Hold up examples of each – distribute as necessary)
Does anyone need a pen? You must use a black or blue pen to complete the survey so your answers will be captured by the scanner. (Distribute pens as necessary)
Is anyone an international student, visiting student, or under 18? (Point them to a team member).
Good morning, my name is ________. We are part of a team from the DoD Office of People Analytics, or OPA. We are here this week to administer the Congressionally-mandated Service Academy Gender Relations Survey.
This survey covers topics on sexual assault, sexual harassment & gender discrimination, leadership response, training, & other related topics here at your Academy.

Let me start by explaining who we are. Our agency is responsible for using collected data to improve lives of military personnel across the DoD.
We are here today to administer a biennial survey that senior DoD officials rely on to evaluate policies and practices at the Academies. The Gender Relations surveys and focus groups have helped shape policies and programs on these critical topics since 2005.

We want to resolve problems related to unwanted sexual behaviors at the Military Academy. The only way we can do that is knowing what’s going on at your Academy through your responses on this survey.
We are often asked what happens to the results of the survey and others like it. Does my input make a difference? It absolutely does. The DoD and the Academies have made major changes in programs over the years as a result of this survey.
We understand that your time is precious, but the 15 minutes it takes you to take this survey will have far-reaching significance. This is the only way we can understand the occurrence of these behaviors here at your academy.. We survey every cadet at the Military Academy and would benefit from everyone’s participation. As future leaders, filling out this survey is your opportunity to lead and take care of others.

First, this survey is completely anonymous. This means that we don’t, and can’t, tie anything you put on the survey to you in any way, shape, or form. Second, because the survey is anonymous, it’s not the vehicle for making an official report. Please don’t write anything identifying of yourself or others.
This is THE survey your Academy uses to monitor progress and the effectiveness of current programs and policies related to these issues. That said, I want to stress that this is a VOLUNTARY SURVEY. The decision to participate is totally yours. You’re not required to complete the survey, but I hope I have stressed the importance of your participation and your help.
Please note that for this survey we ask about unwanted behaviors you might have experienced in the past academic year, between June 2023 and today, and experiences before then.
You might be thinking to yourself, ‘I’ve never experienced any of these behaviors, this survey isn’t relevant to me.’ Please consider that we are trying to understand the extent of unwanted behaviors at your Academy, so it is really important to hear from everyone so that we can get an accurate estimate of how often these things are happening. There are also questions on the survey for everyone, such as views on existing trainings, leadership response, and the culture here at the Academy.
Some of you might consider the questions personal in nature. If you are upset while answering this survey or afterward, or wish to discuss issues further, your survey envelope includes a handout that you can take with you (show handout) regarding where to go for assistance. Of course, we are available to connect you with someone. Also, you may not need these resources right now, but at some point, someone could reach out to you for help, and you may want the resources to help them.

Please look at the “Completion Instructions” at the bottom of the cover page for instructions on how to fill out the survey. As shown on the slide, write an “X” in a blank box for your answer. To change an answer, black out the wrong answer and write an “X” in the box for the correct one. If you have any questions while filling out the survey, please ask a team member.
I want to iterate that the survey is anonymous, so please do not use any personal or unit names or other identifying information anywhere on this survey that would disclose your identity such as dates, name of schools, towns/cities, other people, etc. The first page of the survey booklet includes the “Privacy Advisory” with additional information.
We have a comment section at the end of the survey. (show final comment box). If you need more room, please ask for additional paper.

We really want to thank you for taking the time out of your very busy schedules to hear us out today.
We want our data to accurately reflect what is going on at here at your Academy. Only you can do that. We encourage you to stay, take the survey, and to be honest in your responses so we can all work towards improving the climate at your Academy.
This survey is an extremely important tool in this process and we hope you see the value not only to the Academy and the DoD, but also to you and your fellow cadets.
To conclude, when you finish your survey, please put it in the envelope, seal it, and place it in the box on the way out. (Point out box and appropriate exit). The handout is yours to keep. Thank you again for your time. You may begin.
