Description:
The Science Ambassador Fellowship is the only program of its kind offered by CDC for STEM teachers and educational leaders
interested in bringing public health sciences into middle and high school classrooms. This competitive fellowship includes a 5-day
summer course at CDC headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia, and a 1-year distance-based professional development opportunity. This
year the Science Ambassador Fellowship summer course will be held July 15-19, 2024. Participants in the summer course will learn
about public health concepts directly from CDC experts, tour CDC#s facilities, and develop innovative public health STEM lesson
plans to use in their classrooms. The Epidemiology and Laboratory Workforce Branch (ELWB) will be conducting an evaluation to
assess participants# learning, their appraisals of the program, and opportunities for program improvement.

Goals/Purpose
The purpose of this evaluation is to improve Science Ambassador Fellowship offerings for middle and high school STEM educators.
Objective:
The objective of the following survey is to address the following evaluation questions related to the Science Ambassador Fellowship
(SAF): # To what extent has the SAF program delivered high quality in-person EPHS training sessions for secondary STEM
educators? # To what extent has the SAF program improved the capacity of participating secondary STEM educators to effectively
teach epidemiology and public health science (EPHS)?

Method Categories:
Survey
Methods:
This evaluation activity will consist of two methods: 1) participant experiences collected through an OMB-approved, web-based
survey and 2) observational notes taken during a reflective discussion occurring during the summer course. To assess the extent to
which the CDC Science Ambassador Fellowship (SAF) has delivered high quality in-person trainings for STEM educators that
improve their capacity to teach epidemiology and public health science (see questions 1 and 2), the 2024 CDC Science
Ambassador Fellowship Summer Course Survey will be distributed after completion of the summer course. It will measure selfreported short-term outcomes and gather feedback from participants on their experience attending the SAF Summer Course.
Fellows are selected competitively through an application process and work as secondary STEM educators or other educational
leaders. Following participation in the 5-day summer course, the survey will be administered anonymously on SurveyMonkey and
include both open and closed-ended questions. These survey questions will collect feedback on sessions, knowledge rated
retrospectively before and after the course, other short-term outcomes, perceived relevance of training, behavioral intention to teach
epidemiology and public health topics, use of CDC resources, previous teaching experience, school characteristics, and participant
demographics. This year we anticipate 26 participants in the SAF summer course. The evaluator will be taking notes during a 1hour discussion session planned during the last day of summer course where participants will be asked to reflect on their
experiences and how they can translate what they learned into the classroom. The facilitator will select discussion topics, which will
prompt teachers to share their takeaways from the week, to think about their next steps for incorporating public health into their
classrooms, to consider how they can be a champion for public health in their schools and communities, and to discuss how they
can encourage their students to consider public health as a career option. This session is planned to help teachers bridge their
experience in summer course with the virtual sessions planned during the rest of the year and their plans for teaching in the
upcoming school year. Given the nature of this conversation, the program staff has asked the evaluator to take notes to better
capture key insights into this process. These notes will be summarized to guide program planning for future summer course
offerings and other educational resources developed by CDC. The notes will not capture any personally identifiable information or
be linked to survey responses.
Collection of Info, Data or Biospecimen:
OMB-APPROVED SURVEY: CDC Science Ambassador Fellowship Summer Course Satisfaction Survey All in-person participants
of the CDC Science Ambassador Fellowship Summer Course will be asked to complete an anonymous, web-based survey. The
survey will be administered on SurveyMonkey and include both open and closed-ended questions. Quantitative data will consist
mainly of Likert-scale questions to evaluate training sessions and to collect self-reported short-term outcome measurements, school
characteristics and demographics. Open-ended questions will allow respondents to provide additional qualitative feedback and
comments for improvement. The survey will be open from July 19, 2024 # August 19, 2024. Email invitations and reminder emails
will be sent from the ELWBeval@cdc.gov inbox. NOTES COLLECTED DURING REFLECTIVE SESSION The Science Ambassador
Fellowship Summer Course will be held from July 15-19, 2024. Participants in the summer course will learn about public health
concepts directly from CDC experts, tour CDC#s facilities, and develop innovative public health STEM lesson plans to use in their
classrooms. The evaluator will be taking notes during a large group discussion in which teachers are prompted to reflect on their
experiences and how they can translate what they learned into the classroom. These notes will be coded to capture key insights to
guide program planning for future summer course offerings and other educational resources developed by CDC. The notes will not
capture any personally identifiable information or be linked to survey responses.
Expected Use of Findings/Results and their impact:
Survey findings and notes taken during the reflective discussion will be summarized in aggregate and used for program evaluation
purposes. Results from the evaluation will be presented to the Science Ambassador Fellowship (SAF) program staff on the
Curriculum and Training in Applied Epidemiology, Laboratory Science, and STEM (CaT) Team within ELWB to help plan future
offerings and improve resources available on the website. They will be used by the SAF program to guide program planning for
future summer course offerings and other educational resources developed by CDC. Aggregate data from the survey may be
shared in abstracts or publications.
