How will my data be protected?
Your data are secure. All information
will be kept confidential and used only for
statistical purposes, as required by
federal law. Every person who works on
this study has taken an oath to protect
your data. They are subject to a jail term
of up to 5 years and/or a fine of up to
$250,000 if they disclose ANY
identifiable information about you.

We remove any information that could
reveal who you are. Names are never
recorded or linked with your answers
to the interview questions.
You take the lead. You will answer the
interview questions in private, entering
most of your responses directly into the
computer. The interviewer will not hear
or see your responses. We are only
interested in the combined responses
from all of the nearly 70,000 participants.
We take cyber security seriously.
Security measures include firewalls,
strong passwords, encryption, and other
protection measures for your data.

What is NHSBH?
The National Household Survey on
Behavioral Health (NHSBH) provides upto-date information on alcohol, tobacco,
mental health and other health-related
issues in the United States.
NHSBH began in 1971 and is conducted
every year. This year, we will interview
nearly 70,000 people from across the
United States who want to shape the
future of our nation’s health services.
Your responses can inform the planning
and funding decisions that impact your
community.

How was I chosen?
Your address was randomly chosen
through scientific methods. We do not
have any information on your substance
habits or health.
First, you will need to answer some
general questions that only take a few
minutes. Afterwards, one or possibly
two members of your household may be
selected to complete the full interview.
It is possible no one will be selected for
the interview.
