FHWAR Eligibility Screener for Cognitive Testing

Hello. My name is [NAME] and I work for [insert partner name]. I am calling about your interest in the 2022 National Survey of Fishing, Hunting, and Wildlife-Associated Recreation. Is this a good time to talk? I would like to tell you about the study and you can let me know if you are still interested.

[insert partner name] is conducting this study for the Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies (AFWA) in an effort to collect information about nation-wide participation in hunting, fishing, and wildlife-watching. We are helping to develop a survey for people like yourself who might participate in these activities. You are being asked to take part in a research interview to help us better understand and improve the survey questions. The survey asks about things like the types of activities you take part in, how often you do them, and how much you spend. The survey is online, and to test it, we would like to be on the phone with you as you take it. That way, we can see if you have any problems and ask for your suggestions for improvement. The process will take about 60 minutes and you will be paid $50 in compensation.

Your answers will always be kept private, and none of the information that we collect about you will be used for any purpose other than research. AFWA will not receive your name or any other identifying information about you. Also, your participation is completely voluntary and you may choose to skip any questions the interviewer asks or stop participating at any time.

If you think you’d like to be in the study, I can ask you a few questions to confirm your eligibility to participate. Would you like me to do that now?

  • [IF YES] Great. I am going to ask you a few background questions which will take approximately 5 minutes to confirm your eligibility. Then we can schedule an appointment time for you. GO TO SCREENER QUESTIONS

  • [IF NO] That's okay. We appreciate your consideration. But for research purposes, would you mind telling us why you choose not to participate. Thank you. NOTE TO RECRUITER: IF POTENTIAL RESPONDENT DECIDES AFTER HEARING ABOUT THE STUDY THAT HE/SHE DOES NOT WANT TO PARTICIPATE, ASK WHY NOT AND OFFER TO ANSWER QUESTIONS. RECORD THE RESPONDENT’S REASONS FOR NOT PARTICIPATING BELOW:
