2022 Benchmark Survey of
Foreign Direct Investment in the United States – BE-12
The Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) is conducting the 2022 Benchmark Survey of Foreign Direct
Investment in the United States (BE-12), a mandatory survey that collects data from U.S. companies in
order to produce timely economic statistics.
U.S. business enterprises (including real estate held for non-personal use) are required by law to submit
this form to BEA if a foreign person (in the broad legal sense, including a company) owned or controlled
a direct or indirect voting interest of 10 percent or more of the enterprise at the end of the fiscal year
that ended in calendar year 2022. The information collected on the survey is CONFIDENTIAL and will be
used only for statistical purposes.
Due Date - The due date of your report is May 31, 2023. If you choose to use eFile to submit your
survey, your due date will be June 30, 2023. The BE-12 can be accessed through BEA’s eFile system at
www.bea.gov/efile. If this is your first time using eFile, the username you establish can be linked to the
BE-12 survey using the BE-12 ID number shown at the top of the letter. Additional information for the
BE-12 survey is available at www.bea.gov/be12.
Financial Statements - You are asked to provide a copy of your 2022 annual financial statements as they
may help resolve questions about your survey submission without the need for follow-up contact.
Please send these statements by secure message through eFile or to the address or fax number at the
bottom of this letter.
Certain private funds may be exempt from filing the survey if they meet the criteria in item (f) of the BE12 Claim for Not Filing.
Thank you in advance for your time and cooperation. Your response makes a difference in producing
accurate and objective statistics on the U.S. economy.
Sincerely,

Jessica Hanson
Chief, Direct Investment Division
