Subject: RESPONSE REQUESTED: Annual Survey of State Government Finances
Hello,
I am writing to request information for our Annual Survey of State Government Finances. This annual
survey enables the Census Bureau to develop statistical estimates of government revenue, expenditure,
debt, and assets. We publish these estimates in summarized format, by Census Bureau category, for all
states. The statistics are used by the Bureau of Economic Analysis in that agency's mission to develop
the National Income and Product Accounts - Gross Domestic Product (GDP), national income, and the
like. The statistics also are used by other Federal agencies, states, and policy makers to develop a
variety of important economic measures. The voluntary survey is authorized by Title 13, United States
Code, Section 161 and 182, and has been approved by the U.S. Office of Management and Budget
(approval # 0607-0585). Due to its public nature, information provided from this request are exempt
from confidential treatment as cited in Title 13, United States Code, Section 9.
As in previous years, we would like to obtain copies of the report(s) specified below. The data
requested are for your government's fiscal year that ended June 30, 2022.

If you have any questions about this request, the survey, or the transmission of the files, please contact
me at 1-866-820-7210, or via e-mail at: ewd.state.finance@census.gov.
We request a variety of reports for the annual survey. Some are specialized, while others are standard

Subject: RESPONSE REQUESTED: Annual Survey of State Government Tax Collections
Hello,
The U.S. Census Bureau requests your participation with the 2023 Annual Survey of State Government
Tax Collections (STC). This survey is the only comprehensive source of details on tax collections by type
of tax imposed and collected by state governments in the United States. The U.S. Congress, federal
agencies, state and local governments, educational and research organizations, and the general public
utilize these data for the following purposes: development of gross domestic product estimates,
development of the national income and product accounts, and tax policy research.
Starting with the third quarter of 2023, respondents will no longer be asked to provide pari-mutuel data
(T14). Data for pari-mutuels should now be included in T18 (Sports Betting and Pari-mutuels).
Please utilize the attached F5 excel workbook to provide your responses by January 25, 2024.
To alleviate the potential added burden, respondents have the option to submit a revenue file that
includes all revenue accounts and their descriptions with the dollar amounts. The Census Bureau will
then take over applying the tax codes and aggregating the data. Please do not hesitate to contact us
with any questions or concerns you may have.
Thank you in advance for your time and participation, and for helping the U.S. Census Bureau measure
America’s people, places, and economy.
Sincerely,
Nick Orsini
