National Award Nomination
National Award nominations should include a narrative description and supporting
documentation of a specific achievement in a specific aspect of reclamation, a novel
technique with proven effectiveness, or exemplary performance in meeting goals of
the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA).
The National Award narrative, not to exceed six single-spaced pages, should describe the
specific activity for which the mining operation is nominated. All nominated work must
be attributed to the nominated company. Only one mining permit may be nominated for
an award. Efforts of the nominated company or parent company of multiple mining
permits will not be considered in the judging process. The nominated activity must have
been performed within the past 5 years. The narrative must include:

A brief summary of the mining and reclamation project, which should include a
description of the nominated activity or reclamation practice, including the difficulty
of the project and its effectiveness.
Examples of creativity or ingenuity.
Ways in which the technique or practice performed is transferrable to other mining
permits.
Efforts taken by the operator that exceed the spirit and intent of SMCRA.

Good Neighbor Award Nomination
The Good Neighbor Award nomination includes a narrative description and
supporting documentation of efforts taken by the mine operator to successfully work
with the surrounding land owners and efforts to enhance the community while
completing mining and reclamation.
The Good Neighbor Award narrative should describe the specific activity the mining
operation is nominated for (not to exceed six single-spaced pages). Any nominated work
must be attributed to the nominated company. Only one mining permit may be nominated
for an award. Efforts of the nominated company or parent company of multiple mining
permits will not be considered in the judging process. Efforts of individual employees will
not be considered in the judging process unless the nominated activity was carried out
during normal working hours. The nominated activity must have been performed within
the past 3 years. The narrative must include:

A brief summary of the mining, reclamation, or community project.
Examples of increased public awareness of SMCRA due to actions taken by the
operator.
Long-term benefits to the landowner, and the local or regional community.
Efforts taken by the operator that exceed the spirit and intent of SMCRA.

Paperwork Reduction Act Statement

OSMRE is collecting this information to give public recognition to the nation’s most outstanding
achievement in environmentally sound surface mining and land reclamation, and to encourage the
exchange and transfer of successful reclamation technology. The obligation to respond is voluntary.
Public reporting burden for this collection is estimated to average 17 hours per response,
including time for reviewing instructions, gathering and maintaining data, and completing and reviewing the submission.
