HYDROLOGY

Wetland Hydrology Indicators: Secondary Indicators (minimum of two required)

Primary Indicators (minimum of one is required; check all that apply) Surface soil cracks consist of shallow cracks that form when fine-grained mineral or organic sediments dry and shrink, often creating a network of cracks or small polygons.
Surface Soil Cracks (B6)

This indicator consists of the direct, visual observation of surface water (flooding or ponding) during a site visit.
Surface Water (A1) Presence of live individuals, diapausing insect eggs or crustacean cysts, or dead remains of aquatic fauna, such as, but not limited to, sponges, bivalves, aquatic snails, aquatic insects, ostracods, shrimp, other crustaceans, tadpoles, or fish, either on the soil surface or clinging to plants or other emergent objects.
Aquatic Fauna (B13) On concave land surfaces (e.g., depressions and swales), the ground surface is either unvegetated or sparsely vegetated (less than 5 percent ground cover) due to long-duration ponding during the growing season.
Sparsely Vegetated Concave Surface (B8)

This indicator consists of the direct, visual observation of the water table 12 inches (30 cm) or less below the surface in a soil pit, auger hole, or shallow monitoring well. This indicator includes water tables derived from perched water, throughflow, and discharging groundwater (e.g., in seeps) that may be moving laterally near the soil surface.
High Water Table (A2) This indicator consists of the presence of marl on the soil surface.
Marl Deposits (B15) (LRR U) This indicator consists of flow patterns visible on the soil surface or eroded into the soil, low vegetation bent over in the direction of flow, absence of leaf litter or small woody debris due to flowing water, and similar evidence that water flowed across the ground surface.
Drainage Patterns (B10)

Visual observation of saturated soil conditions 12 inches (30 cm) or less from the soil surface as indicated by water glistening on the surfaces and broken interior faces of soil samples removed from the pit or auger hole. This indicator must be associated with an existing water table located immediately below the saturated zone; however, this requirement is waived under episaturated conditions if there is a restrictive soil layer or bedrock within 12 inches (30 cm) of the surface.
Saturation (A3) A hydrogen sulfide (rotten egg) odor within 12 inches (30 cm) of the soil surface. Note: If macros are disabled, check this blank if you have hydric soil indicator Hydrogen Sulfide (A4) checked.
Hydrogen Sulfide Odor (C1) Presence of moss trim lines on trees or other upright objects in seasonally inundated areas.
Moss Trim Lines (B16)

Water marks are discolorations or stains on the bark of woody vegetation, rocks, bridge supports, buildings, fences, or other fixed objects as a result of inundation.
Water Marks (B1) Presence of a layer of any thickness containing 2 percent or more iron-oxide coatings or plaques on the surfaces of living roots and/or iron-oxide coatings or linings on soil pores immediately surrounding living roots within 12 inches (30 cm) of the surface.
Oxidized Rhizospheres on Living Roots (C3) Visual observation of the water table between 12 and 24 inches (30 and 60 cm) below the surface during the normal dry season or during a drier-than-normal year.
Dry-Season Water Table (C2)

Sediment deposits are thin layers or coatings of fine-grained mineral material (e.g., silt or clay) or organic matter (e.g., pollen), sometimes mixed with other detritus, remaining on tree bark, plant stems or leaves, rocks, and other objects after surface water recedes.
Sediment Deposits (B2) Presence of a layer containing reduced (ferrous) iron in the upper 12 inches (30 cm) of the soil profile, as indicated by a ferrous iron test or by the presence of a soil that changes color upon exposure to the air.
Presence of Reduced Iron (C4) Presence of crayfish burrows, as indicated by openings in soft ground up to 2 inches (5 cm) in diameter, often surrounded by chimney-like mounds of excavated mud.
Crayfish Burrows (C8)

Drift deposits consist of rafted debris that has been deposited on the ground surface or entangled in vegetation or other fixed objects. Debris consists of remnants of vegetation (e.g., branches, stems, and leaves), man-made litter, or other waterborne materials. Drift material may be deposited at or near the high water line in ponded or flooded areas, piled against the upstream sides of trees, rocks, and other fixed objects, or widely distributed within the dewatered area.
Drift Deposits (B3) Presence of a layer containing 2 percent or more redox concentrations as pore linings or soft masses in the tilled surface layer of soils cultivated within the last two years. The layer containing redox concentrations must be within the tilled zone or within 12 inches (30 cm) of the soil surface, whichever is shallower.
Recent Iron Reduction in Tilled Soils (C6) One or more recent aerial photographs or satellite images indicate soil saturation. Saturated soil signatures must correspond to field-verified hydric soils, depressions or drainage patterns, differential crop management, or other evidence of a seasonal high water table.
Saturation Visible on Aerial Imagery (C9)

This indicator consists of a mat or dried crust of algae, perhaps mixed with other detritus, left on or near the soil surface after dewatering.
Algal Mat or Crust (B4) This indicator consists of a layer of muck 1 inch (2.5 cm) or less thick on the soil surface.
Thin Muck Surface (C7) This indicator is present if the area in question is located in a depression, drainageway, concave position within a floodplain, at the toe of a slope, on an extensive flat, on the low-elevation fringe of a pond or other water body, or in an area where groundwater discharges.
Geomorphic Position (D2)

This indicator consists of a thin orange or yellow crust or gel of oxidized iron on the ground surface or on objects near the surface.
Iron Deposits (B5)
Other (Explain in Remarks) This indicator occurs in and around the margins of depressions and in flat landscapes, and consists of the presence of an aquitard within the soil profile that is potentially capable of perching water within 12 in. (30 cm) of the surface.
Shallow Aquitard (D3)

One or more recent aerial photographs or satellite images show the site to be inundated.
Inundation Visible on Aerial Imagery (B7) The plant community passes the FAC-neutral test.
FAC-Neutral Test (D5)

Water-stained leaves are fallen or recumbent dead leaves that have turned grayish or blackish in color due to inundation for long periods.
Water-Stained Leaves (B9) Presence of peat mosses (Sphagnum spp.).
Sphagnum Moss (D8) (LRR T, U)

Hydric Soil Indicators: (Applicable to all LRRs, unless otherwise noted.) Indicators for Problematic Hydric Soils3:

In Histosols, typically 16 inches (40 cm) or more of the upper 32 inches (80 cm) is organic soil material or that have organic soil material of any thickness over rock or fragmental soil material that has interstices filled with organic soil material. This indicator does not include Folists: freely drained Histosols that are saturated with water for less than 30 cumulative days during normal years (and are not artificially drained).
Histosol (A1) A layer 2 inches (5 cm) or more thick, starting at a depth ≤6 inches (15 cm) from the soil surface, with value of 3 or less and chroma of 1 or less. At least 70 percent of the visible soil particles must be masked with organic material, viewed through a 10x or 15x hand lens. Observed without a hand lens, the particles appear to be close to 100 percent masked. This layer is underlain by a layer or layers with value of 4 or less and chroma of 1 or less to a depth of 12 inches (30 cm) or to the spodic horizon, whichever is less.

Loamy Mucky Mineral (F1) (LRR O) In Vertisols and Vertic intergrades, a positive reaction to alpha-alpha-dipyridyl that: a. Is the dominant (60 percent or more) condition of a layer at least 4 inches (10 cm) thick starting at a depth ≤12 inches (30 cm); or at least 2 inches (5 cm) thick starting at a depth ≤6 inches (15 cm) from the mineral or muck soil surface, b. Occurs for at least 7 continuous days and 28 cumulative days, and c. Occurs during a normal or drier season and month (within 16 to 84 percent of probable precipitation).
Reduced Vertic (F18)

Several stratified layers starting at a depth ≤6 inches (15 cm) from the soil surface. At least one of the layers has value of 3 or less and chroma of 1 or less, or it is muck, mucky peat, peat, or a mucky modified mineral texture. The remaining layers have chroma of 2 or less. For any sandy material that constitutes the layer with value of 3 or less and chroma of 1 or less, at least 70 percent of the visible soil particles must be masked with organic material, viewed through a 10x or 15x hand lens. Observed without a hand lens, the particles appear to be close to 100 percent masked. Use of this indicator may require assistance from a trained soil scientist with local experience. A stratified layer is depositional and not pedogenic. An undisturbed sample must be observed. Individual strata are dominantly less than 1 inch (2.5 cm) thick. A hand lens is an excellent tool to aid in the identification of this indicator. Many alluvial soils have stratified layers at greater depths; these soils do not meet the requirements of this indicator. Many alluvial soils have stratified layers at the required depths but do not have chroma of 2 or less; these do not meet the requirements of this indicator.
Stratified Layers (A5) A gleyed matrix that occupies 60 percent or more of a layer starting at a depth ≤12 inches (30 cm) from the soil surface.
Loamy Gleyed Matrix (F2) (outside MLRA 150A, 150B)

Organic Bodies (A6) (LRR P, T, U) A layer that has a depleted matrix with 60 percent or more chroma of 2 or less and that has a minimum thickness of either: a. 2 inches (5 cm) if the 2 inches starts at a depth ≤4 inches (10 cm) from the soil surface, or b. 6 inches (15 cm), starting at a depth ≤10 inches (25 cm) from the soil surface. A, E, and calcic horizons may have low chromas and high values and may therefore be mistaken for a depleted matrix; however, they are excluded from the concept of depleted matrix unless the soil has common or many distinct or prominent redox concentrations occurring as soft masses or pore linings. The low-chroma matrix must be the result of wetness and not a weathering or parent material feature.
Depleted Matrix (F3) On flood plains, a mineral layer at least 6 inches (15 cm) thick, starting at a depth ≤10 inches (25 cm) from the soil surface, with a matrix (60 percent or more of the volume) chroma of less than 4 and 20 percent or more distinct or prominent redox concentrations occurring as soft masses or pore linings.
Piedmont Floodplain Soils (F19) (LRR P, T)

Matrix value of 3 or less and chroma of 1 or less and 10 percent or more redox depletions, or b. Matrix value of 3 or less and chroma of 2 or less and 20 percent or more redox depletions. Care should be taken not to mistake mixing of an E or calcic horizon into the surface layer for depletions. The “pieces” of E and calcic horizons are not redox depletions.
Depleted Dark Surface (F7) (MLRA 153B)

A layer of muck 0.5 inch (1 cm) or more thick with value of 3 or less and chroma of 1 or less and starting at a depth ≤6 inches (15 cm) from the soil surface.

The matrix has a value and chroma greater than 2 and less than or equal to 4. The layer must contain 10 percent or more depletions and/or distinct or prominent redox concentrations occurring as soft masses or pore linings. Redox depletions should differ in color by having: a. Value one or more higher and chroma one or more lower than the matrix, or b. Value of 4 or more and chroma of 2 or less.
Red Parent Material (F21)

A layer with a depleted or gleyed matrix that has 60 percent or more chroma of 2 or less, starting at a depth ≤12 inches (30 cm) from the soil surface, and having a minimum thickness of either: a. 6 inches (15 cm), or b. 2 inches (5 cm) if the 2 inches consists of fragmental soil material. Organic, loamy, or clayey layer(s) above the depleted or gleyed matrix must have value of 3 or less and chroma of 2 or less starting at a depth ≤6 inches (15 cm) from the soil surface and extend to the depleted or gleyed matrix. Any sandy material above the depleted or gleyed matrix must have value of 3 or less and chroma of 1 or less starting at a depth ≤6 inches (15 cm) from the soil surface and extend to the depleted or gleyed matrix. Viewed through a 10x or 15x hand lens, at least 70 percent of the visible sand particles must be masked with organic material. Observed without a hand lens, the sand particles appear to be close to 100 percent masked.
Depleted Below Dark Surface (A11) A layer of marl with value of 5 or more and chroma 2 or less starting at a depth ≤4 inches (10 cm) from the soil surface. Marl is a limnic material deposited in water by precipitation of CaCO3 by algae as defined in Soil Taxonomy (Soil Survey Staff, 1999). It has a Munsel value of 5 or more and reacts with dilute HCl to evolve CO2. Marl is not the carbonatic substrate material associated with limestone bedrock. Some soils have materials with all of the properties of marl, except for the required Munsell value. Normally, this indicator occurs at the soil surface.
Marl (F10) (LRR U) In depressions and and flood plains subject to frequent ponding and/or flooding, one of the following must be observed: a. If bedrock occurs between 6 inches (15 cm) and 10 inches (25 cm) of the soil surface, a layer at least 6 inches (15 cm) thick starting at a depth ≤4 inches (10 cm) from the soil surface with a value 2.5 or less and chroma 1 or less, and the remaining soil to bedrock must have the same colors as above or any other color that has chroma of 2 or less. b. If bedrock occurs at a depth ≤6 inches (15 cm) from the soil surface, more than half of the soil thickness must have value 2.5 or less and chroma 1 or less and the remaining soil to bedrock must have the same colors as above or any other color that has chroma of 2 or less.
Very Shallow Dark Surface (F22)

A layer at least 6 inches (15 cm) thick with a depleted or gleyed matrix that has 60 percent or more chroma of 2 or less starting below 12 inches (30 cm) of the surface. The layer(s) above the depleted or gleyed matrix and starting at a depth <6 inches (15 cm) from the soil surface must have value of 2.5 or less and chroma of 1 or less to a depth of at least 12 inches (30 cm) and value of 3 or less and chroma of 1 or less in any remaining layers above the depleted or gleyed matrix. In any sandy material above the depleted or gleyed matrix, at least 70 percent of the visible soil particles must be masked with organic material, viewed through a 10x or 15x hand lens. Observed without a hand lens, the particles appear to be close to 100 percent masked. A, E, and calcic horizons may have low chromas and high values and may therefore be mistaken for a depleted matrix; however, they are excluded from the concept of depleted matrix unless the soil has common or many distinct or prominent redox concentrations occurring as soft masses or pore linings. The low- chroma matrix must be the result of wetness and not a weathering or parent material feature.
Thick Dark Surface (A12) A layer(s) 4 inches (10 cm) or more thick in which 60 percent or more of the matrix has value of 4 or more and chroma of 1 or less. The layer starts at a depth ≤6 inches (15 cm) from the soil surface.
Depleted Ochric (F11) (MLRA 151) (outside MLRA 138, 152A in FL, 154)

A layer starting at a depth ≤6 inches (15 cm) from the soil surface that is at least 4 inches (10 cm) thick and has a matrix chroma of 3 or less with 2 percent or more distinct or prominent redox concentrations occurring as soft masses and/or pore linings. These hydric soils occur mainly on depressional landforms and portions of the intermound landforms on the Lissie Formation.
Coast Prairie Redox (A16) (MLRA 150A) On flood plains, a layer 4 inches (10 cm) or more thick with 40 percent or more chroma of 2 or less and 2 percent or more distinct or prominent redox concentrations occurring as soft iron-manganese masses with diffuse boundaries. The layer starts at a depth ≤8 inches (20 cm) from the soil surface. Iron- manganese masses have value and chroma of 3 or less. Most commonly, they are black. The thickness requirement is waived if the layer is the mineral surface layer.
Iron-Manganese Masses (F12) (LRR O, P, T) In the swale portion of the swale-and-dune complexes of barrier islands, a surface layer 0.5 inch (1 cm) or more thick with value 4 or less and chroma 2 or less. Below the dark surface, one or more layers 4 inches (10 cm) or more thick occurs with a dominant hue of 2.5Y or yellower and value 4 or more and chroma less than 2 starting at a depth ≤6 inches (15 cm) from the soil surface. The requirement of a dark surface layer above the low chroma layer excludes sediments from recent depositional events (especially common in overwash areas) which are not hydric. Low chroma colors in recent deposits are likely due to the nature of the parent material and not related to hydrology. There is no color requirement for any layer(s) between the dark surface and the low chroma matrix. This indicator is limited to sandy soils in dune-and-swale complexes of barrier islands.
Barrier Islands Low Chroma Matrix (TS7)

A layer of mucky modified sandy soil material 2 inches (5 cm) or more thick starting at a depth ≤6 inches (15 cm) from the soil surface.
Sandy Mucky Mineral (S1) (LRR O, S)

A layer 10 inches (25 cm) or more thick, starting at a depth ≤6 inches (15 cm) from the soil surface, in which the upper 6 inches (15 cm) has value of 3 or less and chroma of 1 or less and in which the lower 4 inches (10 cm) has the same colors as those described above or any other color that has chroma of 2 or less.
Umbric Surface (F13) (LRR P, T, U) (MLRA 153B, 153D)

Delta Ochric (F17) (MLRA 151)
Other (Explain in Remarks)

A layer starting at a depth ≤6 inches (15 cm) from the soil surface that is at least 4 inches (10 cm) thick and has a matrix with 60 percent or more chroma of 2 or less and 2 percent or more distinct or prominent redox concentrations occurring as soft masses and/or pore linings.
Sandy Redox (S5) In Vertisols and Vertic intergrades, a positive reaction to alpha-alpha-dipyridyl that: a.
Reduced Vertic (F18) (MLRA 150A, 150B)

A layer starting at a depth ≤6 inches (15 cm) from the soil surface in which iron-manganese oxides and/or organic matter have been stripped from the matrix and the primary base color of the soil material has been exposed. The stripped areas and translocated oxides and/or organic matter form a faintly contrasting pattern of two or more colors with diffuse boundaries. The stripped zones are 10 percent or more of the volume and are rounded.
Stripped Matrix (S6) On flood plains, a mineral layer at least 6 inches (15 cm) thick, starting at a depth ≤10 inches (25 cm) from the soil surface, with a matrix (60 percent or more of the volume) chroma of less than 4 and 20 percent or more distinct or prominent redox concentrations occurring as soft masses or pore linings.
Piedmont Floodplain Soils (F19) (MLRA 149A)

A layer 4 inches (10 cm) thick, starting at a depth less than or equal to the upper 6 inches (15 cm) from the soil surface, with a matrix value 3 or less and chroma of 1 or less. At least 70 percent of the visible soil particles must be masked with organic material, viewed through a 10x or 15x hand lens. Observed without a hand lens, the particles appear to be close to 100 percent masked. The matrix color of the layer directly below the dark layer must have the same colors as those described above or any color that has chroma of 2 or less. From Regional Supplement v2.0 User Notes: If the dark layer is greater than 4 inches (10 cm) thick, then the indicator is met, because any dark soil material in excess of 4 inches (10 cm) meets the requirement that "the layer immediately below the dark layer must have the same colors as those described above…". If the dark layer is exactly 4 inches (10 cm) thick, then the material immediately below must have a matrix chroma of 2 or less.
Dark Surface (S7) (LRR P, S, T, U) Within 656 feet (200 m) of estuarine marshes or water and within 3.28 feet (1 m) of mean high water, a mineral layer at least 4 inches (10 cm) thick, starting at a depth ≤8 inches (20 cm) from the soil surface, with a matrix (60 percent or more of the volume) chroma of less than 5 and 10 percent or more distinct or prominent redox concentrations occurring as soft masses or pore linings and/or depletions.
Anomalous Bright Floodplain Soils (F20)

At least 70 percent of the visible soil particles must be masked with organic material, viewed through a 10x or 15x hand lens. Observed without a hand lens, the particles appear to be close to 100 percent masked. Directly below this layer, 5 percent or more of the soil volume has value of 3 or less and chroma of 1 or less, and the remainder of the soil volume has value of 4 or more and chroma of 1 or less to a depth of 12 inches (30 cm) or to the spodic horizon, whichever is less.
