Special Note
Tables containing principal vegetable totals by State were discontinued beginning with this report. The
estimates contained in these tables were often incomplete due to individual crop disclosure limitations as
well as limited inclusion of various States and crops in the NASS annual vegetable estimating program.
Interested data users can generate these totals using NASS’ online database (QuickStats)
at https://quickstats.nass.usda.gov/.

Vegetable Comments
Artichokes: Production in 2021 totaled 833,000 cwt, up 9 percent from 2020. Planted area was estimated at 4,900 acres,
down 4 percent from the previous year. Area harvested, at 4,900 acres, was down 4 percent from 2020. The value of the
crop totaled $57.5 million, 10 percent below the previous season. Utilized production totaled 833,000 cwt, all of which
was for the fresh market.
In California, despite artichokes in the Coachella region getting off to a late start due to the desert heat, the plants
flourished and were very productive. In the primary growing region of the Central Coast, cool winter weather and pest
pressures reduced early supplies, but better spring weather allowed the crop to recover with good quality and excellent
production.
Asparagus: Production in 2021 totaled 606,800 cwt, down 3 percent from 2020. Planted area was estimated at
18,000 acres, down 4 percent from the previous year. Area harvested, at 17,000 acres, was down 6 percent from 2020. The
value of the crop totaled $69.7 million, down 11 percent from the previous season. Utilized production totaled
599,400 cwt, of which 462,900 cwt was for the fresh market and 6,824 tons for processing.
In Michigan, the largest producing State, cool spring weather provided growers with some extra time to prepare fields and
complete pre-season tasks, near or below freezing temperatures delayed the start of harvest. Asparagus acreage has
continued to decline in California, due to rising labor costs, competition from imports, and limited availability of
irrigation water. High labor rates and regulations, and a shortage of workers, had a major impact on harvest, packing, and
distribution causing some operations to cut back or get out. However, sales of high-quality organic asparagus continue to
increase from year to year.
Snap beans: Production in 2021 totaled 15.1 million cwt, up 5 percent from 2020. Planted area was estimated at
178,700 acres, down 1 percent from the previous year. Area harvested, at 173,200 acres, was also down 1 percent from
2020. The value of the crop totaled $276 million, 6 percent above the previous season. Utilized production totaled
15.1 million cwt, of which 2.65 million cwt was for the fresh market and 621,775 tons for processing.
In Wisconsin, the largest producing State, it was reported that the reproducing population of the potato leafhoppers (PLH)
exceeded thresholds across southern and central Wisconsin, after the State experienced extreme temperatures during the
growing season. In Florida, rainfall was below average during the spring, but increased during the summer. The dry
conditions early on placed downward pressure on yields. In Michigan, insect and disease pressure was present during the
growing season, but did not pose serious challenges to the crop. Harvest concluded without any major issues. Harvest
progress lagged behind 2020 in New York, with harvest virtually complete by mid-October.
Broccoli: Production in 2021 totaled 13.8 million cwt, down 13 percent from 2020. Planted area was estimated at
106,200 acres, up 5 percent from the previous year. Area harvested, at 105,700 acres, was also up 5 percent from 2020.
The value of the crop totaled $719 million, 18 percent less than the previous year. Utilized production totaled
13.8 million cwt, of which 13.3 million cwt was for the fresh market and 22,727 tons for processing.
In California, the largest producing State, Broccoli prices increased as cooler weather in growing areas is limited supplies.
Crown quality was very good. Brown bead, hollow core, and yellowing were reported to be minor issues.
Cabbage: Production in 2021 totaled 21.2 million cwt, down 10 percent from 2020. Planted area was estimated at
58,200 acres, down 2 percent from the previous year. Area harvested, at 57,000 acres, was also down 2 percent from
2020. The value of the crop totaled $457 million, 1 percent more than the previous season. Utilized production totaled
21.1 million cwt, of which 18.1 million cwt was for the fresh market and 147,760 tons for processing.
In California, weather during planting in the fall of 2020 and through head development in 2021 was favorable. No
significant pathogen impact on the crop was reported. Demand for cabbage was on the rise with consumer interest in
health benefits during the continuing pandemic. Cabbage growers planted less acres this year when compared to last year.
Weather conditions were a mixture of dry and wet conditions during the season in most of the cabbage producing areas. In

Georgia, growing conditions were favorable at the start of the season in top production areas.
Cantaloupes: Production in 2021 totaled 10.6 million cwt, down 6 percent from 2020. Planted area was estimated at
37,100 acres, down 1 percent from the previous year. Area harvested, at 36,900 acres, was down 1 percent from 2020. The
value of the crop totaled $278 million, 5 percent below the previous season. Utilized production totaled 10.6 million cwt,
all of which was for the fresh market
In California, the largest producing State, production of cantaloupes was strongly impacted by higher input costs,
including water.
Carrots: Production in 2021 totaled 31.6 million cwt, up 3 percent from 2020. Planted area was estimated at
71,700 acres, up 3 percent from the previous year. Area harvested, at 71,200 acres, was up 3 percent from 2020. The value
of the crop totaled $831 million, 1 percent more than the previous year. Utilized production totaled 31.6 million cwt, of
which 24.9 million cwt was for the fresh market and 333,147 tons for processing.
In California, the largest producing State, the rise in the pandemic led to a surge in carrot demand, resulting in an increase
in prices and labor costs. The carrot market was steady with good supplies; growers saw jumbo and cello size in the fields.
In the southern San Joaquin and Cuyama Valleys, the top carrot producing counties in California, growers reported severe
drought conditions, limiting water supplies in 2021.
Cauliflower: Production in 2021 totaled 8.21 million cwt, down 10 percent from 2020. Planted area was estimated at
45,200 acres, up 5 percent from the previous year. Area harvested, at 45,100 acres, was up 5 percent from 2020. The value
of the crop totaled $343 million, 2 percent less than the previous season. Utilized production totaled 8.21 million cwt, of
which 7.89 million cwt was for the fresh market and 15,563 tons for processing.
In California, prices received by growers improved. Cooler weather slowed growth, resulting in lighter volume, but
quality remained strong with good sizing and color.
Celery: Production in 2021 totaled 15.3 million cwt, down 5 percent from 2020. Planted area was estimated at
28,000 acres, down 4 percent from the previous year. Area harvested, at 27,800 acres, decreased 3 percent from the
previous year. The value of the crop totaled $375 million, up 4 percent from previous year. Utilized production for 2021
totaled 15.3 million cwt, down 5 percent from 2020.
In California, cold and wet weather slowed production during the end of the year. Some growers in the Oxnard area
reported crop damage due to flooding and a canal breach. Additionally, fusarium and insects caused reduced yields for
some producers. The market was tight for organic celery during a portion of the 2021 growing season.
Sweet corn: Production in 2021 totaled 57.7 million cwt, down 5 percent from 2020. Planted area was estimated at
371,100 acres, down 4 percent from the previous year. Area harvested, at 356,700 acres, was also down 4 percent from
2020. The value of the crop totaled $775 million, 4 percent more than the previous year. Utilized production totaled
57.4 million cwt, of which 14.2 million cwt was for the fresh market and 2.16 million tons were for processing.
In Washington, the largest producing State, extreme drought conditions during the growing season were perfect for sweet
corn. Washington’s sweet corn harvest looked good. In Minnesota, high abandonment occurred due to extremely dry
conditions, but sweet corn yields were not affected by the exceptional heat. In Wisconsin, despite reports of tar spot and
wind damage, growers attained average yields. Growers in Georgia reported higher than average yields and good quality.
Extreme drought prevailed over much of the sweet corn growing areas of California. Nearly, a quarter of all irrigated
cropland had irrigation supplies reduced. In Florida, acreage increased due to high demand. Low temperatures caused
some minimal damage to the crop early in the season. In mid-season, growers reported warm weather and scattered
showers, but no harvest delays. Oregon experienced extreme drought conditions in many areas. As a result, some growers
did not plant sweet corn.
Cucumbers: Production in 2021 totaled 14.4 million cwt, up 15 percent from 2020. Planted area was estimated at
91,600 acres, down 1 percent from the previous year. Area harvested, at 90,500 acres, was down 1 percent from 2020. The

value of the crop totaled $261 million, 16 percent more than the previous season. Utilized production totaled
14.3 million cwt, of which 3.98 million cwt was for the fresh market and 518,222 tons for processing.
Michigan, the largest producing state of pickling cucumbers, started transplanting in the beginning of May. Cooler
weather and scattered showers in June were favorable for development of downy mildew. Harvest went well throughout
late June and early July, with minimal disease issues reported. Florida weather conditions were good during the growing
season with adequate rain. Areas did not suffer from dry conditions late in the season, preventing crop loss. Cucumbers
looked good during harvest, with no major issues reported, as disease and pest pressure remained low. Georgia cucumbers
are grown primarily in the southern portion of the State where conditions were ideal throughout most of the growing
season. In California, the beginning of summer was identical to last year, with cool temperatures in June and oppressive
heat in July, as cucumber harvest continued. Mostly grown in the San Joaquin Valley and in Southern California, about
two-thirds of the cucumbers grown were pickling varieties. Production and values were up from 2020, showing some
recovery from the pandemic, but not yet at pre-pandemic levels.
Garlic: Production in 2021 totaled 4.19 million cwt, up 18 percent from 2020. Planted area was estimated at 26,500 acres,
up 12 percent from the previous year. Area harvested, at 26,200 acres, was up 11 percent from 2020. The value of the crop
totaled $244 million, 1 percent more than the previous season. Utilized production totaled 4.19 million cwt, of which
1.05 million cwt was for the fresh market and 157,200 tons for processing.
In California, despite the minimal water availability and the extreme heat, the garlic crop was above average. Moisture
received in April was beneficial and the crop was able to survive the hot temperatures.
Honeydew: Production in 2021 totaled 1.76 million cwt, down 20 percent from 2020. Planted area was estimated at
6,900 acres, down 4 percent from the previous year. Area harvested, at 6,900 acres, was also down 4 percent from 2020.
The value of the crop totaled $48.9 million, up 7 percent from the previous season. Utilized production totaled
1.76 million cwt, all of which was for the fresh market.
In California, higher input costs, including water, reduced supply. Consumer demand for honeydews increased, which
resulted in higher prices than the previous season.
Head lettuce: Production in 2021 totaled 35.1 million cwt, down 9 percent from 2020. Planted area was estimated at
105,000 acres, down 2 percent from the previous year. Area harvested, at 104,300 acres, was down 2 percent from 2020.
The value of the crop totaled $965 million, 21 percent less than the previous season. Utilized production totaled
35.1 million cwt, all of which was for the fresh market.
In California, the largest producing State, the market was steady while supply remained low. Labor, weather, and quality
were concerns throughout the growing season. High temperatures and humidity in the Salinas Valley during July and
August caused stress for some of the crop, which resulted in internal burn and fog burn. In California and Arizona, there
were reports of below freezing temperatures causing harvesting and packing delays.
Leaf lettuce: Production in 2021 totaled 12.5 million cwt, down 20 percent from 2020. Planted area was estimated at
61,300 acres, down 3 percent from the previous year. Area harvested, at 60,900 acres, was down 1 percent from 2020. The
value of the crop totaled $655 million, 40 percent less than the previous season. Utilized production totaled
12.5 million cwt, all of which was for the fresh market.
In California, the largest producing State, production continued to trend downward as the market remained steady. Quality
was fair, while pricing remained competitive. In California and Arizona, extreme temperatures affected crop quality and
harvest efforts. There were reports of below freezing temperatures, causing harvesting and packing delays.
Romaine lettuce: Production in 2021 totaled 27.2 million cwt, down 10 percent from the 2020 total. Planted area was
estimated at 94,900 acres, down 1 percent from the previous year. Area harvested, at 93,900 acres, was up slightly from
2020. The value of the crop totaled $1.06 billion, 28 percent less than the previous season. Utilized production totaled
27.2 million cwt, all of which was for the fresh market.
80
Vegetables 2021 Summary (February 2022)
USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service
In California, Romaine production decreased in 2021. The crop experienced some quality issues that affected yield. With
iceberg supply being low, a much stronger demand was created for Romaine. In Arizona, the growing season got off to a
slow start due to below average temperatures, which contributed to lower yields.
Onions: Production in 2021 totaled 68.4 million cwt, down 7 percent from 2020. Planted area was estimated at
138,900 acres, up 4 percent from the previous year. Area harvested, at 136,800 acres, was up 4 percent from 2020. The
value of the crop totaled $1.04 billion, 8 percent more than the previous year. Utilized production totaled 67.7 million cwt,
of which 46.4 million cwt was for the fresh market and 1.07 million tons were for processing.
In California, the largest producing State, growers had low expectations early in the season, given the extreme heat
challenges and limited water supply. Onions dried up too quickly and volumes were disappointing. Dryness and long
periods of intense heat, led to expansion of wildfires and prolonged lack of sunlight, causing minimal damage to the crop.
Widespread, Fusarium basal rot was reported on the west side of the San Joaquin Valley, causing some onions to decay
and lower yields. In Colorado, between the heat and the smoke in the northwest, yields were down. Some onions were
abandoned and had to be plowed under. Growers experienced some hail during harvest. In Georgia, the dry conditions
were nearly perfect for onion production, with the weather being fairly cool and dry. Early in the growing season,
excessive rainfall delayed planting, as well as, in applying some fertilizers and pesticides. Below normal temperatures
reduced yields and onion sizes. Some fields were abandoned or not harvested, due to fungal and bacterial diseases, such as
Stemphylium leaf blight, center rot, and sour skin. In Idaho, onion planting wrapped up in early May. Extreme heat
damaged some onions and led to poor quality. Weather conditions allowed growers to maintain excellent harvest progress.
In Oregon, a dismal blend of high summer temperatures, smoke from wildfires, and a windy spring, interfered with the
growing season, impacting the crop quality. Increased instances of iris yellow spot virus caused fields to mature about a
week faster than normal. In Malheur County, some growers replanted onions due to wind damage in April. High levels of
heat impacted the size of onions and reduced yields. Onion harvest was close to finishing up in mid-October.
Green peas: Production in 2021 totaled 4.54 million cwt, down 14 percent from 2020. Planted area was estimated at
132,700 acres, up 2 percent from the previous year. Area harvested, at 129,600 acres, was up 2 percent from 2020. The
value of the crop totaled $71.3 million, 4 percent below the previous season. Utilized production totaled 4.53 million cwt,
of which 4,500 cwt was for the fresh market and 226,481 tons for processing.
In Washington, the largest producing State, record setting high temperatures reduced yields. In Minnesota, the second
largest producing State, yields were minimally impacted by dry conditions and growers were able to harvest a better than
expected crop.
Bell peppers: Production in 2021 totaled 10.0 million cwt, down 5 percent from 2020. Planted area was estimated at
32,200 acres, down 8 percent from the previous year. Area harvested, at 31,200 acres, was down 9 percent from 2020. The
value of the crop totaled $462 million, 23 percent less than the previous year. Utilized production totaled 9.97 million cwt,
of which 7.96 million cwt was for the fresh market and 100,517 tons for processing.
In California, it was a good year overall. Demand for the crop remained strong, overriding rising production costs and
transportation issues. In Florida, growers planted slightly less acres when compared to the previous year. Most of the
major growing areas had a mixture of dry and wet conditions which did not hurt the crop quality as yields showed
improvement from the previous season. In Georgia, much of the crop grown is in the southwest part of the State where
conditions were wet during the start of the season. In Michigan, the growing season began in early May as producers
began hoop house plantings. Within the month, transplanting and staking were underway, with some tunnel-grown
peppers in the early bloom stage. Dry weather in May allowed producers to remain ahead of their transplant schedules,
and by mid-June, early peppers had begun initial fruit set. Increased precipitation and cooling temperatures in early June
allowed for continued transplanting of the crop. Field plantings were setting buds, and flowering by the middle of the
month and bearing fruit by the end. Early July gave way to hot conditions and bacterial symptoms in field peppers were
reported in the East. Following a period of heavy and persistent precipitation, the crop throughout the state was displaying
symptoms of disease and nutritional issues, including blight damage on some farms. Harvest continued smoothly
throughout the late summer.
Vegetables 2021 Summary (February 2022)

Chile peppers: Production in 2021 totaled 1.67 million cwt, down 12 percent from 2020. Planted area was estimated at
10,900 acres, up 5 percent from the previous year. Area harvested, at 10,600 acres, was up 7 percent from 2020. The value
of the crop totaled $74.5 million, 4 percent less than the previous year. Utilized production totaled 1.66 million cwt, of
which 446,900 cwt was for the fresh market and 60,667 tons for processing.
In California, demand was strong in early spring but declined across the food service sector. The growing season was very
hot with many days over 100 degrees, but the heat did not seem to affect pepper production. Similar to the previous year,
much of the State was consumed by wildfires that blanketed the State in smoke for months. Continued drought
contributed to a higher cost of production.
Pumpkins: Production in 2021 totaled 16.7 million cwt, up 26 percent from 2020. Planted area was estimated at
74,400 acres, up 13 percent from the previous year. Area harvested, at 69,600 acres, was up 11 percent from 2020. The
value of the crop totaled $233 million, 27 percent more than the previous season. Utilized production totaled
16.5 million cwt, of which 10.6 million cwt was for the fresh market and 292,930 tons for processing.
In Illinois, the crop had little to no problems with pest or mold. The weather was excellent for pumpkin production,
contributing to one of the best yields in recent years. In Indiana, pumpkin growers reported generally favorable weather.
While high temperatures and occasionally heavy rainfall in June and July led to adverse effects in some pumpkin fields,
the impact was not widespread. The season got off to a good start in Pennsylvania, however, due to excessive rain in
August and September, some areas reported the soilborne disease, phytophthora. This disease can cause the plant and fruit
to collapse in the field. It can also cause the fruit to collapse 2 to 3 days after harvest.
Spinach: Production in 2021 totaled 6.94 million cwt, down 3 percent from 2020. Planted area was estimated at
54,500 acres, down 7 percent from the previous year. Area harvested, at 53,800 acres, was down 8 percent from 2020. The
value of the crop totaled $496 million, 10 percent less than the previous season. Utilized production totaled
6.94 million cwt, of which 6.40 million cwt was for the fresh market and 26,860 tons for processing.
In California, the largest producing State, water supply was an issue for vegetable growers as they experienced severe
drought conditions during the 2021 growing season. In Texas, favorable weather conditions and few insect and disease
problems enabled the quality on the crop to be good. Growers reduced their acreage, reportedly due largely to the
uncertain market demands from restaurants as a result of the pandemic.
Squash: Production in 2021 totaled 6.91 million cwt, up 3 percent from 2020. Planted area was estimated at 43,800 acres,
down 5 percent from previous year. Area harvested, at 42,400 acres, was down 3 percent from 2020. The value of the crop
totaled $216 million, 11 percent below the previous season. Utilized production totaled 6.85 million cwt, of which
5.26 million cwt was for the fresh market and 79,252 tons for processing.
In Michigan, continued hot and dry weather during the growing season, resulted in high insect activity. Growers increased
herbicide applications and irrigation measures to safeguard the crop. Growers also applied fungicides and insecticides
where necessary in response to on-going disease and pest pressure.
Sweet potatoes: Production in 2021 totaled 28.9 million cwt, down 4 percent from 2020. Planted area was estimated at
153,500 acres, down 2 percent from the previous year. Area harvested, at 152,700 acres, was down 2 percent from 2020.
The value of the crop totaled $680 million, 2 percent more than the previous season. Utilized production totaled
28.9 million cwt, of which 22.3 million cwt was for the fresh market and 327,289 tons for processing.
In North Carolina, the largest producing State, the growing season went well for producers with 82 percent of the crop
reported in good to excellent condition at the end of the growing season. In California, slightly lower yields and increased
demand when compared to the previous year caused the price of sweet potatoes to increase slightly. Supply chain issues
combined with manpower issues also contributed to the price increases.
Tomatoes: Production in 2021 totaled 231 million cwt, down 4 percent from 2020. Planted area was estimated at
274,000 acres, down 2 percent from the previous year. Area harvested, estimated at 269,900 acres, was down 1 percent

from 2020. The value of the crop totaled $1.51 billion, 7 percent less than the previous season. Utilized production totaled
229 million cwt, of which 13.2 million cwt was for the fresh market and 10.8 million tons for processing.
In California, drought concerns impacted planting decisions for the 2021 processing tomato crop and planted acreage
decreased significantly from early season contracted intentions. Extremely high temperatures in May and throughout the
summer lowered expected yields and slowed down operations at the canneries. Harvest began the first week of July and
continued through November, marking the longest harvest in recent years. During the winter and spring months in
Florida, portions of the State were dry, but as summer arrived, rainfall increased over most of the State. Although
conditions were dry during the early part of the year, there was adequate precipitation to provide a sufficient amount of
moisture for growth and development.
Watermelons: Production in 2021 totaled 34.1 million cwt, down 1 percent from 2020. Planted area was estimated at
102,000 acres, up 5 percent from previous year. Area harvested, estimated at 99,000 acres, was up 5 percent from 2020.
The value of the crop totaled $534 million, 7 percent less than the previous season. Utilized production totaled
33.7 million cwt, of which 33.7 million cwt was for the fresh market and 2,298 tons for processing.
In Florida, the largest producing State, summer rainfall provided enough moisture for vegetable growth and development
despite a dry winter and spring.

Definitions of Terms
Area harvested: The total vegetable acreage harvested for all purposes (both fresh and processing utilization).
Area planted: The total vegetable acreage planted for all purposes (both fresh and processing utilization).
Harvested not sold: The difference between total production and utilized production. These are vegetables that were
harvested from the field, but were not sold for various reasons including but not limited to poor quality, marketing
restrictions, or other reasons.
Hundredweight (cwt): The standard unit used for the all yield, all total production, harvested not sold, all utilized
production, as well as the fresh market utilized production and fresh market price. One hundredweight is equal to
100 pounds.
Ton: Standard unit for processed vegetables. One ton is equal to 2,000 pounds.
Total Production: The quantity of a crop that was actually harvested and left the field.
Utilization: These estimates refer to the first utilization, not necessarily the final utilization of a crop. For example, fresh
market vegetables include some vegetables that may be later processed for sauce, soups, and preserves. Grade-outs for
vegetables which are processed are included in the processing quantity.
Utilized production: The amount of a crop sold for fresh market, sold for processing, the quantities used at home to make
processed items, or held in storage. It is the difference between total production and harvested not sold.
Processing: Operations that alter the general state of the commodity, such as canning, cooking, freezing, dehydration,
milling, grinding, pasteurization, pickling, juicing, or slicing.
Fresh Market: Utilized production that is not processed is considered fresh market.
Yield per acre: Total production divided by area harvested.
Price and Value Definitions
Price: Represents the Marketing Year Average (MYA) price. For a crop sold for both fresh market and processing, the
(MYA) is a weighted average of the fresh and processing prices.
Prices for fresh vegetables are the average prices producers receive at the point of first sale. This is commonly referred to
as the average price as sold. Since the point of first sale is not the same for all producers, prices for the various methods
of sale are weighted by the proportionate quantity sold. For example, if in a given State part of the vegetables are sold free
on board (F.O.B.) packed by growers, part are sold as bulk vegetables at the packinghouse door, and some are sold retail
at roadside stands, the fresh vegetable average price as sold is a weighted average of the average price for each method
of sale.
F.O.B. packed prices are adjusted to an equivalent incoming packinghouse door price by subtracting all costs that
accumulate between the incoming packinghouse door and the F.O.B. price. These costs include grading, packing,
inspecting fees, selling, and other costs. Prices for vegetables sold for processing are equivalent returns for vegetables
delivered to the processing plant door.
Value: Crop value estimates in this report cover the marketing season or crop year and should not be confused with cash
receipts which are based on a calendar year.

Statistical Methodology
Survey Procedures: Starting with the 2012 Crop year, acreage, production, marketing year price and value information
included in this report is collected on an annual basis for fresh market and processing vegetables. A sample of vegetable
growers are surveyed in major producing States in the program. The Vegetable Sampling Frame consists of farm
operators with at least 0.1 acre on the list frame for specific vegetable commodities. The Multivariate Probability
Proportional to Size (MPPS) sampling design is used to select the sample. The sample does not have an area component.
Data are collected by mail out questionnaires and personal interviews. Telephone follow-up of mail survey nonrespondents is used to ensure adequate coverage. Due to the variable nature of the vegetable industry, mail lists are
updated to ensure complete coverage.
Estimation Procedures: Information obtained from the vegetables grower surveys along with federal administrative data
is used to establish estimates of total planted and harvested acres, yield, production, price, and value. These estimates are
reviewed for errors, reasonableness, and consistency with historical estimates.
Revision Policy: End-of-season vegetable estimates are subject to revision the following year based on a thorough review
of all available data and are published in the Vegetables Annual Summary.
Reliability: Survey indications are subject to sampling variability because all operations growing vegetables are not
included in the sample. Survey results are also subject to non-sampling errors such as omission, duplication, imputation
for missing data, and mistakes in reporting, recording, and processing the data. These errors cannot be measured directly,
but are minimized through rigid quality controls in the data collection process and a careful review of all reported data for
consistency and reasonableness.
