PRE-CONSENT

NORC at the University of Chicago and the National Science Foundation have done the
General Social Survey (GSS) for 50 years to keep a historical record of the concerns,
experiences, attitudes and practices of Americans. This is a follow-up survey to the 2022 GSS.
You were selected from participants in the 2022 GSS for participation in this short follow-up
survey. The information collected is used by policy makers, scientific researchers, government
officials and students to better understand Americans and better meet their changing needs.
The questions we’ll ask have to do with culture and life in the U.S. You can decline to answer
any question.
Your participation does not involve any risks other than what you would encounter in daily life.
Most participants find the survey to be interesting with a chance to think about things that matter
to them. The survey will take about 10 minutes to complete. You may also be contacted in the
future to participate in a future round of the General Social Survey or another study established
by the National Science Foundation. Participation in this round of the survey does not obligate
you to participate in any future rounds of the General Social Survey or any other surveys. Any
future participation on your part will again require us to gain your consent.

CONSENT

Your participation is voluntary. Your responses to this survey are considered a continuation of
participation to the GSS survey you had completed earlier so the answers can be analyzed
together, and all information that you provide will be kept in strict confidence. It is important to
us to protect your privacy. All participants’ answers are combined, and presented in the form of
summary statistics, such as tables and graphs. If you decline to answer a question or a portion
of the interview, data from other questions you have answered may be used in these summary
statistics.
We have received a Certificate of Confidentiality from the National Institutes of Health. This
means that your answers will be kept confidential, even if the researchers receive a court order

or subpoena to release information that could identify you. The protection offered by the
certificate does not stop the researchers from voluntarily reporting information about suspected
or known sexual, physical, or other abuse of a child or elderly person, or a participant’s threats
of violence to self or others. If you voluntarily give your written consent for anyone to receive
information about your participation in this research, then we may not use the certificate to
withhold this information.
If you have questions about your rights as a research participant, you may call the NORC
Institutional Review Board Manager toll-free at 1-866-309-0542. If you have questions about the
General Social Survey, you can contact the project hotline at 1-888-837-8988.
Please press ‘Next’ to continue with the survey.
