Dear ___________:

Thank you for agreeing to participate in this important study on fire management in [Arizona/Colorado, New Mexico, Texas]’s forests. You have been chosen for this study as part of a random sample of [Arizona/Colorado, New Mexico, Texas] residents.

Enclosed is the survey booklet that our telephone interviewer indicated would be mailed to you. You will be asked about the wildland fire risk condition of the areas where you live and the expected losses you would incur if a wildland fire affected your community and your homes. The booklet will provide you information about different fuel reduction methods to reduce the risk of a wildland fire, and you will be asked to express your preference for different fuel reduction options at the personal and public agency levels.

Even if you do not live near forestland or have never visited [Arizona/Colorado, New Mexico, Texas]’s forests, public fire managers are very interested in your views concerning management of [Arizona/Colorado, New Mexico, Texas]’s forestlands. Public forest managers such as the [Arizona/Colorado, New Mexico, Texas] [Division of Forestry, Fire Protection], and USDA Forest Service are interested because reducing the risks of wildfire affects all of us in many ways including our safety, air quality, recreation opportunities, and the taxes we pay.

It takes approximately 25 minutes to complete the questionnaire. When you have completed the questionnaire, please mail the survey questionnaire in the enclosed postage paid return envelope.

Your participation in this survey is voluntary. Your responses are strictly anonymous and will be used only for statistical purposes to determine patterns and trends. You will not be identified in any way and your name or address will not be distributed or sold to any mailing list. Your opinions will be summarized along with those of others to reflect Arizona citizens’ opinions about fire prevention in [Arizona/Colorado, New Mexico, Texas]’s forests.

If you have any questions or concerns about this study, feel free to call me at the Survey Research Center at (XXX) XXX-XXXX or email me at yyy@server.edu

Thank you for participating in the study and we look forward to receiving your completed survey in the mail.

Sincerely,

Dr. SSS, Director
