Noncitrus Fruits and Nuts 2018 Summary (June 2019)
USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service
89
Noncitrus Fruits Comments
Apple, Commercial: Utilized production in 2018 totaled 9.89 billion pounds, down 7 percent from comparable States in
2017. Bearing acreage was estimated at 291,200, up 1 percent from comparable States in the previous year. The average
yield was 35,200 pounds per acre, down 2,500 pounds from comparable States in the previous year. Of the total utilized
production, 6.87 billion pounds were for the fresh market and 3.03 billion pounds were for processing. The value of the
crop totaled $3.01 billion, down 11 percent from comparable States in the previous season, with an average annual price
of 30.5 cents per pound.
Washington growers reported that fire blight was particularly challenging, with less fruit on the trees than appeared at first
glance. Growers also reported fruit that matured on the outside but not on the inside, requiring multiple passes through the
orchard to harvest. Michigan growers reported no major disease or insect issues. Fruit quality was very good. New York
growers reported unseasonably cool temperatures in the spring, slowing bud development and flowering, but by August
growers were reporting a good crop during the early harvesting season.
Beginning in 2018, apple estimates were discontinued in Connecticut, Idaho, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts,
Minnesota, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Vermont, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.
Apricot: Utilized production in 2018 totaled 39,370 tons, down 13 percent from 2017. Bearing acreage was estimated at
10,600, down 6 percent from the previous year. The average yield was 3.73 tons per acre, down 0.31 ton from the
previous year. Of the total utilized production, 23,870 tons were for the fresh market and 15,500 tons were for processing.
The value of the crop totaled $48.5 million, up 9 percent from the previous season, with an average annual price of
$1,230 per ton.
In California, the crop did not receive its required chilling hours at the correct times, caused by higher than average
temperatures during the important fall months.
Avocado: Utilized production in 2018-2019 totaled 183,500 tons, down 2 percent from the previous year. Bearing acreage
was estimated at 53,640, down 8 percent from the previous year. The average yield was 3.46 tons per acre, up 0.23 ton
from the previous year. Of the total utilized production, 182,010 tons were for the fresh market and 1,490 tons were for
processing. The value of the 2018-2019 crop totaled $400 million, up 2 percent from the previous season, with an average
annual price of $2,180 per ton.
In California, the largest producing State, heatwaves in July and August caused some sun damage to trees and heavy fruit
drop. The high temperatures accelerated the harvest. Labor shortages and high water costs continued to be reported by
growers. In Florida, disease and hurricane damage continued to negatively impact groves. Acreage and production
increased in Hawaii, driven by higher demand for Hawaiian avocado exports.
Banana: Beginning in 2018, banana estimates were discontinued.

In California, Freestone growing conditions were ideal with warm days and cool evenings which helped with color and
sizing. California’s Clingstone crop full bloom occurred during the middle of March, a few days later than 2017. While
the bloom was considered to be good, colder than normal spring temperatures appeared to have negatively impacted the
fruit set. Some hail damage was reported in the Modesto area during the middle of April, however the overall impact on
the crop was minimal. In South Carolina, a freeze in March affected some early varieties in low lying locations. Size and
price were reported as very good. In Georgia, there were adequate chill hours for the crop. However, a few freezes in early
to mid-March damaged some early varieties.
Beginning in 2018, peach estimates were discontinued in Alabama, Idaho, Illinois, Maryland, Missouri, New York,
North Carolina, Ohio, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and West Virginia.

Cold and wet weather conditions during the bloom caused variability in pollination. Hot weather over the summer slowed
the development and sweetness of fruit on the trees. Growers reported a good fruit set, but noted losing some branches in
older groves that had wood rot and disease issues.
Raspberry: Utilized production in 2018 totaled 217 million pounds, down 1 percent from comparable States in 2017.
Harvested acres were estimated at 16,900, down 7 percent from comparable States in the previous year. The average yield
was 12,900 pounds per acre, up 800 pounds from comparable States in the previous year. Of the total utilized production,
132 million pounds were for the fresh market and 85.0 million pounds were for processing. The value of the crop totaled
$367 million, down 25 percent from comparable States in the previous season, with an average annual price of $1.69 per
pound.
California’s raspberry producing regions experienced both freezing temperatures and heavy rains in the spring months.
Cooler temperatures during the summer led to higher yields. Growers along the Central Coast wrapped up harvest near the
end of October. Washington’s raspberry growers struggled to find contracts due to an oversupply of imported frozen
raspberries. Producers grappled with the decision as to whether to accept a much lower processing price or leave
production in the fields.
Beginning in 2018, raspberry estimates were discontinued in Oregon. Black and red raspberry estimates were
discontinued for all States.
Strawberry: Utilized production in 2018 totaled 28.6 million cwt, up 5 percent from 2017. Area harvested was estimated
at 49,220 acres, down 7 percent from the previous year. The average yield was 580.6 cwt per acre, up 69.2 cwt from the
previous year. Of the total utilized production, 22.9 million cwt were for the fresh market and 5.63 million cwt were for
processing. The value of the crop totaled $2.67 billion, down 8 percent from the previous season, with an average annual
price of $93.50 per cwt.
In California, the largest producing State, many growers reported an increase in yields due to new varieties. Favorable
weather conditions for most of the season led to increased production compared with the previous season. In Florida,
growers reported warm and favorable weather conditions as well. In North Carolina, warmer weather in February resulted
in earlier blooms. In the spring, a freeze event, followed by rainy weather, caused some damage to the crop.
Tree Nuts Comments
Almond: Utilized production in California for 2018 was estimated at 2.24 billion pounds, up 1 percent from 2017.
Bearing acreage was estimated at 1.09 million, up 6 percent from the previous year. The average yield was 2,090 pounds
per acre, down 110 pounds from the previous year. The value of the crop totaled $5.47 billion, down 2 percent from the
previous season, with an average annual price of $2.44 per pound.
The bloom began a few days earlier than normal, but was extended due to cold temperatures, and lasted a few weeks.
Frosts during bloom hit orchards hard, especially on the east side of the valley, with younger trees impacted more severely
than older trees. Weather during the spring was variable. As temperatures warmed up in May, nuts sized well. Disease and
mite pressure was light. Yields were down from 2017 as a significant number of new tree acres came into bearing.
Hazelnut: Utilized production in Oregon for 2018 totaled a record high 51,000 tons, up 59 percent from 2017.
Bearing acreage was estimated at 44,000, up 10 percent from the previous year. The average yield was 1.16 tons per acre,
up 0.36 ton from the previous year. The value of the crop totaled $91.8 million, up 25 percent from the previous season,
with an average annual price of $1,800 per ton.
In Oregon, overall acreage has doubled in the last 10 years, as varieties resistant to Eastern Filbert Blight have been
developed. Growers favor the crop because it is both high-value and low-maintenance. Weather conditions were favorable
during the pollination period.

2,090 pounds per acre, down 790 pounds from the previous year. The value of the crop totaled $42.0 million,
down 22 percent from the previous season, with an average annual price of $1.19 per pound.
Growing conditions in Hawaii were negatively impacted by the eruption of a volcano. Also, heavy rains from Hurricane
Lane in the fall damaged the crop, causing lower yields.
Pecan: Utilized production in 2018 totaled 243 million pounds, down 20 percent from 2017. Bearing acreage was
estimated at 409,900, up 1 percent from the previous year. The average yield was 593 pounds per acre, down 160 pounds
from the previous year. Of the total utilized production, 206 million pounds were sold shelled and 37.4 million pounds
were sold in shell. The value of the crop totaled $425 million, down 40 percent from the previous season, with an average
annual price of $1.75 per pound.
New Mexico production surpassed Georgia production for the first time since 2006. In Georgia, pecan production was the
lowest since 2006. This was the result of Hurricane Michael negatively impacting much of the pecan growing region. In
addition, wet conditions during the summer months increased disease pressure and later limited the harvest of nuts blown
off trees. Extended wet conditions and heavy rains during harvest affected the quality and quantity of pecans harvested in
Texas.
Pistachio: Utilized production in California for 2018 totaled a record high 987 million pounds, up 64 percent from the
previous year. Bearing acreage was estimated at 264,000, up 6 percent from the previous year. The average yield was
3,740 pounds per acre, up 1,340 pounds from the previous year. Of the total utilized production, 742 million pounds were
sold in shell and 245 million pounds were sold shelled. The value of the crop totaled $2.62 billion, up 158 percent from
the previous season, with an average annual price of $2.65 per pound.
California pistachios are an alternate bearing crop and 2018 was an “on” year. High yields, increasing acreage, and low
insect damage led to the highest production on record.
Walnut: Utilized production in California for 2018 totaled 676,000 tons, up 7 percent from the previous year.
Bearing acreage was estimated at 350,000, up 4 percent from the previous year. The average yield was 1.93 tons per acre,
up 0.05 ton from the previous year. Of the total utilized production, 469,000 tons were sold shelled and 207,000 tons were
sold in-shell. The value of the crop totaled $879 million, down 44 percent from the previous season, with an average
annual price of $1,300 per ton.
Late spring rains attempted to damper the crop, but provided cooler conditions which increased kernel size and helped
quality. Insect pressure was reported to be down from last year. During the excessive heat waves over the summer,
growers applied sunburn preventative materials.

Definition of Terms
Bearing acreage: An orchard, grove, or vineyard is considered to be of bearing age when it can normally be expected to
produce a commercially significant quantity of the crop. Bearing age is a function of many factors including variety,
rootstock, year planted, etc.
Apple crop: Apple production estimates are published only for commercial orchards, according to the laws governing
crop production reports (7 U.S.C 590a). Commercial orchards, under these laws, are defined as orchards of 100 or more
bearing trees.
Harvested not sold: Fruit of marketable quality that was picked but not sold for various reasons are included in total
production.
Total production: The quantity of utilized production plus quantities harvested but not sold.
Utilization: These estimates refer to the first utilization, not necessarily the final utilization of a crop. For example, frozen
fruit includes some fruit that may be later used for making preserves. Grade-outs for fresh market fruit which are
processed are included in the processing quantity.
Utilized production: The amount of a crop sold plus the quantities used at home or held in storage represents utilized
production.
Yield per acre: Unless otherwise stated, yield per acre is based on total production.
Price and Value Definitions
Price: Prices in this report represent the Market Year Average (MYA) price. For a crop sold for both fresh market and
processing, the total crop MYA is a weighted average of the fresh and processing prices.
Prices for fresh fruit represent the average price producers receive at the point of first sale. This is commonly referred to
as the average price as sold. The exception is fresh fruit sales in California, Michigan (apples only), New York (apples
only), and Washington which are equivalent returns at packinghouse door.
Prices for fruit sold for processing are equivalent returns for fruit delivered to the processing plant door except for
cranberries, California olives, and freestone peaches, which are priced at the first delivery point.
Value: Crop value estimates in this report cover the marketing season or crop year and should not be confused with cash
receipts which are based on a calendar year.

Statistical Methodology
Survey Procedures: Probability based grower disposition surveys are used to collect acreage, yield, production, and price
data. These fruit inquiries are generally mailed surveys at the end of the growing season. Telephone follow-up of mail
survey non-response is used to ensure adequate coverage. They provide indications of the quantity used on farms, the
quantity sold directly to consumers, and production not sold or utilized.
Estimating Procedures: Information obtained from the non-citrus fruits and nuts grower surveys along with federal
administrative data is used to establish estimates of bearing acres, yield, total production, utilized production, price, and
value. These estimates are reviewed for errors, reasonableness, and consistency with historical estimates.
Revision Policy: Final survey indications and check data for most non-citrus fruits and nuts are available prior to
submitting utilization estimates. End-of-season estimates of production are made following harvest and are subject to
revision the following year based on a thorough review of all available data.
Reliability: Survey indications are subject to sampling variability because all operations growing non-citrus fruits and/or
nuts are not included in the sample. Survey results are also subject to non-sampling errors such as omission, duplication,
imputation for missing data, and mistakes in reporting, recording, and processing the data. These errors cannot be
measured directly, but are minimized through rigid quality controls in the data collection process and a careful review of
all reported data for consistency and reasonableness.
