USFWS Pacific Northwest Bumble Bee Symposium Questionnaire
Purpose

The purpose of our questionnaire is to gather the background information that will guide the
development of a Pacific Northwest Bumble Bee Symposium, to possibly be held in 2021, 2022, or
2023. The Pacific Northwest (PNW) is home to at least 27 species of bumble bee – more than half of
all bumble bees native to North America. The PNW holds the historic range of several of the species
that are currently in ESA review (Franklin’s, Western, Suckley’s) and others of conservation concern
(Morrison’s, others). Some coordinated, landscape-scale conservation efforts are underway (the
Oregon Bee Atlas, the PNW Bumble Bee Atlas, and others), but much work remains to be done and
significant research opportunities exist. This symposium aims to gather Bumble Bee conservationists
from different organizations in the Pacific Northwest to discuss Bumble Bee conservation, the
projects being conducted, and the research that still needs to be done. The overall goal is to gather
pertinent information in order to organize an event that will be timely, relevant, and valued-added for
all stakeholders. We need to gather stakeholder feedback to ensure an improved and high quality
symposium.
Description of Respondents

Federal and State wildlife agency staff from OR, ID, WA, CA, and possibly the provinces of British
Columbia and Alberta, Canada; conservation organizations, NGOs and special interest groups (such
as the Xerces Society and The Wildlife Society), local Tribes, and certain regional researchers and

Federal Cost: (Consult your Bureau/Office Information Collection Clearance Officer for assistance, if necessary)
The estimated annual cost to the Federal government is $ 540.00

, based on: (provide details below)

The development, implementation, and reporting the results of this questionnaire is being completed
by two Fish & Wildlife Service Director's Fellow Program (DFP) summer interns, as part of their
program for FY20. The DFPs receive a stipend as part of their internship which is part of the
programmatic funding for the DFPs. The weekly stipend for one DFP is $540.00, and we expect a
total of 40 hours to be spent on the development of the questionnaire, collecting and collating
responses. No additional costs will be incurred.
Sample Response to Federal Cost Question:
“If we receive 20 submissions and it takes 30 minutes to process and implement each one, then the total burden is $322.40
assuming a GS-7 step 5 is processing the submissions. Please note, however, that this custom form is a tool meant to accept
submissions in a standard format rather than through the freeform submissions that would otherwise come in by personal email.
Thus the existence of this form actually saves the government money by standardizing submissions and decreasing the workload of
processing each one.”

If you are conducting a focus group, survey, or plan to employ statistical methods, please provide answers to the
following questions:
Selection of Targeted Respondents
1. Do you have a customer list (or something similar) that defines the universe of potential respondents and do you have a
sampling plan for selecting from this universe?
■
No
Yes If “Yes,” please provide a description of both below (or attach the sampling plan). If the answer is no, please
provide a description of how you plan to identify your potential group of respondents and how you will select them.

We have a list of participates which we developed, sourced from existing professional contacts, conservation
partnership, work groups, and contact lists. All stakeholders are active regional bumble bee conservation stakeholders.
Participants will complete the questionnaire, selecting from multiple choices for their responses, and submit the
completed questionnaire via Microsoft Forms. Completing the questionnaire should take a participant less than 10
minutes.
Sample Response to Question 1 Above:
“Participants will self-select by choosing to follow the link to submit a resource. This is really no different than any website’s “Contact
Us” type of link; this submission form is only used by those who want to contribute to the toolkit. The “Submit a resource” link will be
located on the bottom of the toolkit homepage.”
