B2 Key Informant Interview Guide—MX

Introduction 10 minutes

My name is and I am talking with you on behalf of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). I am here today to get your opinion about education materials about tuberculosis. These materials are still in development. Getting your reaction to them at this stage will help us improve the materials so that the information is helpful and easier to understand. Your opinions are really important to us and we want you to share your best thoughts and ideas. Our conversation will help us improve the materials for other families who are getting medical evaluations for immigration to the United States. Talking to me is completely voluntary and will not affect your immigration process or access to medical care. You can choose to not answer any questions and stop our conversation at any time. Our conversation will not last for more than an hour and a half, and will likely be shorter. First, let’s discuss how things will work during today’s conversation.

• Privacy

  • Your name will not be used, and we will not keep any written record of your name nor will anyone besides those involved in the project have access to the information collected today. If you are worried about your privacy, you can use a different name during the conversation.

  • Your participation will not in any way affect your child’s immigration process or timeline.

• Audio recording and observers/note taker

  • We will be using audio recorders to record today’s conversation which will help us remember what you say since there will be a lot of information discussed and we won’t be able to write everything down.

• We want your honest opinions

  • Again, the main goal today is to get your opinions about these materials so we can make them easier to understand by other people who are going through the immigration medical process. We also want to be sure the materials answer questions about the process that other immigrants are likely to have. So, please do not hesitate to point out things that you don’t like or don’t understand.

• During the discussion, please feel free to ask any questions about the materials.

If intercepting participant after they meet with a physician

12. It is really important that children who are identified as B2 contact the local health department for an evaluation once they arrive at their destination in the United States. What will help others complete this part of the process?

9. What concerns do you have about being able to be evaluated by the local health department? (not understanding the health system, language, transportation, fear of impacting immigration, etc.)

13. After receiving all this information, is there anything else from the education session and printed materials that still doesn’t make sense?
