Abstract: The Automated Mutual Assistance Vessel Rescue System (AMVER) is operated by the U.S. Coast Guard to provide the location at sea of U.S.-flag and certain U.S. owned but foreign-flag ships for (1) Search and Rescue (SAR); and (2) the marshalling of ships for national defense and safety purposes. The response to the collection is mandatory to gather information regarding the location of U.S.-flag vessels and certain other U.S. citizen-owned vessels for search and rescue in the saving of lives at sea and for the marshalling of ships for national defense and safety purposes. DOT MARAD Office of Ship Operations receives the information and maintain the data for use emergency response and military operations.

Short Statement: The total number of burden hours reported has changed to reflect only the number of respondents and burden hours for MARAD. The previously reported number of respondents and burden was a combined total for MARAD and the Coast Guard. MARAD's Office of Ship Operations makes use of AMVER in a limited way; the Office access information only on U.S.-flag vessels or those foreign-flag vessels which request that their position reports be made available to MARAD.
