Early career doctorates (post docs)
are critical to the success of the U.S. scientific enterprise and
will influence U.S. and global scientific markets for years to
come. Through its multi-year Postdoc Data Project, NCSES determined
the need for and the feasibility of gathering information about
postdocs and other ECDs working in the United States. The Early
Career Doctorates Project is designed to gather in-depth
information about a nationally representative sample of early
career doctorates (ECDs), including postdoctoral researchers
(postdocs). In addition to generating nationally representative
data from ECD that can be used by funding agencies, policy makers,
and other researchers to better understand the labor markets for
and work experiences of recent doctorate recipients, the current
collection is designed to identify the role of the ECDS in the
context of NCSES’s suite of science and engineering workforce
surveys (the Survey of Doctorate Recipients, the Survey of Earned
Doctorates, and the National Survey of College Graduates. The
findings from this evaluation will guide the future decisions for
the ECDS including the timing, population coverage, survey content,
and sample design for any future surveys of the ECD
population.
