TPMSEQ Some vehicles are equipped with a tire pressure monitoring system (known as TPMS). The TPMS checks the air in each tire. If the air pressure in any of the tires is low, a dash light comes on. Is this vehicle equipped with a TPMS—whether or not it is currently working?

///IF SCREEN8=1 SET DISPO=37, Screen Out: Phase-in vehicle, no indication of TPMS, not reported as equipped

///ASK IF TPMSEQ=1, Respondent reports vehicle is equipped with TPMS///

TPMSTYPE There are two basic types of TPMS systems. A “direct” TPMS has a sensor in the valve stem or the wheel of each tire that measures the tire’s air pressure. An “indirect” TPMS has wheel-speed sensors in the anti-lock braking system of each tire that calculate the tire’s air pressure. Is the TPMS system in this vehicle direct or indirect?

  1. DIRECT

  2. INDIRECT

  1. CONTINUE

Respondents continuing past this point will be given a complete (“in-depth”) interview.

///ASK IF TPMSMALF=1,2,4, Indicator lights on @ ON///

INTRO1C When we checked your dash lights, we found that your vehicle is equipped with TPMS. As I mentioned earlier, the TPMS checks the air in each tire, and if the air pressure in any of the tires is low, a dash light comes on. This same dash light will flash or a separate TPMS malfunction light will come on if the TPMS system malfunctions – for example, due to a damaged pressure sensor. Properly inflating all of the vehicle’s tires should cause the low pressure light to turn off, but it will NOT fix a malfunctioning TPMS system and the TPMS malfunction light will not turn off. This survey is specifically concerned with TPMS system malfunctions.
