  1. When the “Choose Destination Location” window appears, click the “Next” button.

  1. When the “Installation Complete” window appears, click the “OK” button. The pop-up windows should begin to disappear, returning you to the “Get Started” page.

  1. Click “Users Log-in” at the bottom to begin entering data. With the downloads complete, you should come directly here for future reporting.

  1. The first time you log-in your computer may take up to five minutes to load the application. Logging-in should get faster after the first time.

  1. This is the SAFIS log-in screen. None of the menu choices on the left are active. They remain inactive until you enter a valid user name and password (also called a PIN) issued by NOAA Fisheries or your state resource agency.

  1. SAFIS allows users to save unfinished log book entries for up to two weeks. Each time you log-in, SAFIS will remind you of any unfinished log books. If you are not ready to complete them, click the “NO” button.

  1. SAFIS accommodates a variety of reporting structures, including some fisherman reporting. Some functions may not be accessible to every dealer depending on their agency requirements.

To specify the type of report you are beginning, click the corresponding circle, then click the “Continue” button. If you have no activity to report for the specified reporting period, click the “Negative Report” circle then the “Continue” button.

  1. To enter information on the fisherman selling the catch, click the button marked “ALL” to the right of the “Fisherman” field. This will activate your clickable “Frequently Used Fisherman and Associated Vessels” list. Click the down-pointing arrow to scroll to the bottom of the list.

Over time, SAFIS will remember the fishermen with whom you often do business and create this list for you.

To enter data for a Frequently Used Fisherman click one from the list and the “OK” button. Click “Cancel” if the fisherman selling in not on this list.

  1. If you click “Cancel” from the Frequently Used Fisherman list, a full list of all licensed fishermen will pop-up. Click fisherman’s name, then click the “OK” button.

  1. If you select a Frequently Used Fisherman, the fields for “State License,” “Port Landed,” “Vessel Fed Permit #,” “USCG/St Reg #” and “Vessel” should fill-in automatically. However, the “Port Landed” can be changed.

If there was no vessel used, click the box to the right of “No Vessel”.

If you chose a fisherman from the pop-up window of all license holders, only the name and license number for the fisherman will automatically fill-in. Use the drop-down boxes for the other fields.

  1. Click the plus sign (+) next to the species name to display the various size categories for that species. The plus sign will then change to a minus sign (-).

  1. If you downloaded Adobe Acrobat 5.0 from the Downloads section of the Get Started page or elsewhere, your computer will automatically launch that program and produce your report as a PDF file. Unlike files produced through word processing software, PDF files cannot be altered.

You may choose to print or file these reports electronically. To close the PDF file click the X in the upper right corner of the document window.

  1. Click the “Exit” button to go back to the “Home” page.

  1. When you exit, SAFIS will ask you to enter an email address so you can receive emails confirming receipt of your log books. This is optional. If you do not already have an email address, there are numerous free email services online, including www.hotmail.com and www.yahoo.com.

Click the “OK” button to continue.

  1. The first time you see this screen, enter your email address and re-enter your password, then click the “CONFIRM REPORT SUBMISSION” button to exit.
