Dear Parent:
We are seeking adolescents aged 12 to 17 to participate in an important research study to evaluate
some new and revised questions on the use of alcohol, marijuana, and other substances. These
questions will be included in the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH).
NSDUH provides up-to-date information on alcohol, tobacco, and drug use as well as mental health and
other health-related issues in the United States. NSDUH is directed by the Substance Abuse and Mental
Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services
(DHHS).
NSDUH is an annual nationwide survey of the civilian, non-institutionalized United States population
aged 12 years old or older. It began in 1971 and is conducted every year with almost 70,000 people from
across the United States. The study provides national and state-level data on the use of tobacco, alcohol,
illicit drugs (including misuse of prescription drugs) and mental health in the United States.
Your child’s participation will help us evaluate whether the survey questions make sense and are easily
understood by adolescents. There are no direct benefits to you or your child from participating in this
interview. However, the answers your child give will help us to improve the quality of questions for the
NSDUH.
The study is being conducted by RTI International, a nonprofit research organization that also conducts
the annual NSDUH. Participation is completely voluntary and all information is kept private and
confidential.
Thank you for your help and consideration.
Sincerely,
Jonaki Bose
