The U.S. Census Bureau requests your participation in the Survey of
Construction (SOC), which produces statistics on new residential
construction. The permit information from your office and many others
around the country will allow accurate classification of building permits
in the SOC.

The survey produces estimates of starts and completions of new
single- and multifamily units and sales of new single-family houses.
Government and private entities use these statistics to monitor and
evaluate the large and dynamic housing construction industry and to
make vital economic decisions.
The Census Bureau requests your voluntary assistance under the
authority of the Title 13, United States Code, Sections 131 and 182.
We estimate this survey to take an average of 15 minutes to complete.
Information provided on this questionnaire compiled from, or
customarily provided in, public records are exempt from confidential
treatment as cited in Title 13, United States Code, Section 9(b). On the
back of this letter, you will find disclosure descriptions regarding the
Office of Management and Budget number; authority and
confidentiality; and burden estimate statement. A Census Bureau
Representative will call or visit you to explain the survey and to gather
information.
