Regarding Proposed Meaningful Access Features
The following questions are based on the premise that the recommendations made by the
BEP to provide meaningful access of U.S. banknotes, including incorporation of a tactile
feature, will be approved by the Secretary of the Treasury.
Definition: The terminology “meaningful access feature” is used to define features added
to banknotes with the intention of assisting blind and visually impaired persons to
differentiate banknote denominations.
General Questions
1. Does your organization currently manufacture equipment that is capable of
processing currency that includes “meaningful access features”?
2. Please explain which “meaningful access features” your equipment can handle.
3. Are there any “meaningful access features” which you prefer and are there any which
you would want to avoid completely for U.S. currency?
4. Do you anticipate any difficulties or problems with the operation of your machines if
a tactile feature is incorporated into the substrate used for U.S. banknotes? If so, what
are they?
