Request for Non-Substantive Change to the

U.S. Department of Commerce

U.S. Census Bureau

Annual Survey of Manufactures (ASM)

OMB Control No. 0607-0449

The Annual Survey of Manufactures (ASM) is currently offered to respondents as both an electronic instrument and a paper survey form.  The ASM will now move to exclusively a web-based, response driven, downloadable reporting instrument.  Paper forms will no longer be available.  Companies will be sent a letter directing them to report electronically and will be supplied a unique authentication code for the electronic reporting tool.  Respondents have the option of printing out a worksheet that lists all of the questions.  Respondents can print the worksheet to use as a guide to respond or can print the worksheet after completing the questionnaire as a record of their response.

No changes are requested to any of the data items, and the information collected electronically is identical to that collected on the current paper form. Furthermore, the changes will not affect the respondent burden for the survey.  Worksheet previews of the long and short questionnaires are provided in Attachment A.  Attachment B shows the letter that will be included in the mail-out package.

The contact person for questions relating to this collection is Mr. Julius Smith, Jr., Assistant Division Chief of the Manufacturing, Mining and Construction Sectors in the Census Bureau’s Economy-Wide Statistics Division.  He can be reached at (301) 763-7662.
