What is the National Survey of Psychiatrists?

The National Survey of Psychiatrists (NSP) is the first national survey to be the principal data source used for disseminating information to researchers, policy makers, and the public on the psychiatry workforce.


How is the information used?

The information you provide will be used to….

  • Evaluate and project the supply and demand of the psychiatry workforce at the national level.

  • Assess the impact of current state and federal programs for psychiatrists and the need for future assistance.

  • Identify trends in psychiatrist characteristics such as education and training, employment, income, and demographics.


Why should I participate?

You were randomly selected to participate and you represent hundreds of other psychiatrists in your state. Your responses are unique and cannot be replaced by someone else. You are vital in helping us gather accurate and complete data about the workforce of psychiatry in the United States. Participation is voluntary and there are no penalties for not answering individual questions. It is estimated participation will take 25 minutes.


How will my information be kept confidential?

The U.S. Census Bureau is conducting this survey on behalf of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) under Title 13, United States Code, Section 8(b). Public Service Act 42, U.S.C., Section 290(a)-(a), allow HHS to collect information for the purpose of understanding the psychiatry workforce in the United States. Federal law protects your privacy and keeps your answers confidential under 13 U.S.C., Section 9. per the Federal Cybersecurity Enhancement Act of 2015, your data are protected from cybersecurity risks through screening of the systems that transmit your data. Disclosure of the information provided to us is permitted under the Privacy Act of 1974 (5 U.S.C. § 552a) and may be shared with other Census Bureau staff for the work-related purposes. Disclosure of this information is also subject to all of the published routine uses as identified in the Privacy Act System of Records Notice COMMERCE/Census-3.
