EDIT TEACHER DEBRIEFING PROTOCOL

teacher debrief protocol

Thank you for taking the time to speak with me about your experiences with the Examining Data Informing Teaching (EDIT) project. We appreciate your time and efforts. The information you provided will help us to improve our EDIT measure and help us to better understand how teachers assess the progress of children in their classrooms and use the data to inform and modify classroom instruction.

During this conversation, I would like to ask you some follow-up questions about your experiences with the study. I will ask you about what was easy, what was difficult, how much time was required of you, and whether parts of the process could be improved. I’ll ask you about each part of the process in the order that you encountered them. Your participation is completely voluntary and you may skip any questions that you do not want to answer, but we hope you will be able to help us by answering these questions. This call should take about fifteen minutes.

Please note that all information you share will remain private to the extent permitted by law. No one from your program will see your individual responses, and your name will never be associated with or identified in study reports. An agency may not conduct or sponsor, and a person is not required to respond to, a collection of information unless it displays a currently valid OMB control number. The OMB control number for this collection is 0970-0355 and it expires 03/31/2018. As a reminder, you will receive a $20 gift card as a thank you for participating in this call.

Before we begin, do you have any questions for me?

[Interviewer: If any information was missing from the site visit, please collect the missing information.]

Part A: Consent Forms

I’d like to start with some of the first activities you helped us with…

  1. How easy or difficult was it for you to collect consent forms from parents? (Can you tell me more about that? How did you distribute and collect the forms?)

  2. How long did it take you to gather the consents?

[Interviewer: Please compare the response to the number of consented children in the class.]

  1. Did any parents ask you questions about the study? If so, please describe.

  2. Did any parents express concern or excitement about the study? If so, please describe.

Part B: Collection of Documents

As you might remember, we asked you to gather some documents for us to review…

  1. How easy or difficult was it to gather the documents that we requested about the focal child(ren)? (Can you tell me more about that?)

  1. How long did it take you to gather the documents?

  2. How did you decide which documents to include?

Part C: Video-Recoding Observations

Now, I would like to ask about the video recordings…

  1. How easy or difficult was it to operate the tablet to video-record? (Can you tell me more about that?)

  1. Were the instructions about how to record easy to follow?

  2. Were the instructions about what to record easy to follow?

  3. Did you do a practice run with the tablet? If so, how long did that take?

[Interviewer: This will give us an idea of how much total time it takes for teachers to record their own videos.]

  1. Did you take multiple video-recordings to try to capture the same event (possibly deleting recordings that you did not like)?

Part D: Interview

We also met with you at the end of the visit to conduct an interview.

  1. Were the interviewer questions clear and understandable?

[Interviewer: Have a copy of the interview nearby if needed.]

  1. Was there anything that we did not ask about during the interview that you would have liked to share with us about how you conduct ongoing child assessment and individualize instruction for children?

Part E: Overall Process

Regarding the overall process…

  1. Do you have suggestions for improvements to any of the procedures related to participating in this project?

  1. Would you be willing to participate in a similar research experience in the future?

  2. If you were to tell other teachers about this experience, how would you describe it? Would you encourage them to participate?

  3. Do you feel differently about ongoing child assessment and individualized instruction as a result of reflecting on this process for us?
