SUBJECT: Soliciting Comments until February 6, 2015, on Proposed
TsunamiReady Guidelines
NWS is accepting comments until February 6, 2015, on proposed
TsunamiReady Guidelines.
The TsunamiReady Guidelines have been in place and unchanged
since 2001. The NWS began reviewing the guidelines to consider
updating them in 2007. In 2010, at the urging of the National
Tsunami Hazard Mitigation Program (NTHMP) Coordinating Committee, a contract was awarded to social scientist Dr. Chris Gregg of East Tennessee State University. Dr. Gregg's research team conducted a series of focus groups with emergency managers and community stakeholders to solicit feedback on proposed updated guidelines. Dr. Gregg submitted a report of recommendations for changes to the Guidelines to NOAA in April, 2014.
In June through October, 2014, the National Weather Service conducted 12 online and in-person discussions about the proposed Guidelines and incorporated changes based on those discussions.
As a result and in collaboration with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Tsunami Program, NWS Weather Forecast Offices, and the NTHMP, a proposed set of TsunamiReady Guidelines were created and are open for public review and comment.
These guidelines correspond with ongoing improvements to the NWS StormReady Guidelines, which have been made to better align the program with the framework emergency managers are accustomed to working in: Mitigation, Preparedness, Response, and Recovery.
The proposed TsunamiReady Guidelines are online at:
http://nws.weather.gov/nthmp/tr/
Following the comment period, NWS will evaluate all received
comments and decide how to proceed.
