The proposed research will build on a
recent data collection conducted by the National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Alaska Fisheries Science Center
(AFSC) that collected baseline social data from GOA trawl
groundfish fishery participants (OMB Control No. 0648-0685). In
this previous study, the research team attempted to interview all
relevant participants in the fishery; however, during survey
implementation, the team discovered that the catcher processor
(C/P) fleet was fundamentally different than the rest of the
harvesting sector participants, thus requiring revision of the
survey instrument in order to capture the unique aspects of the C/P
fleet. This data collection will specifically target the C/P fleet
using a revised version of the previous survey. The survey will
provide a significant amount of information about the fundamental
social characteristics of the fleet that has not been previously
collected.
