WALKTHROUGH - EX02. WAYSIDES
The waysides appear in three locations, where they
help visitors to understand what they are looking at
(or in the direction of) and its significance. Images and
quotes help to set the scene; provocative questions will
encourage relevant reflection. Each features a small,
graphic aerial view of the fort, showing the visitor where
they are and where the element being discussed is
located.

TACTILE REPLICATES THE
EAGLE SCULPTURE

Outside the fort:

EX02-1 (EAGLE WAYSIDE): UNDER THE
EAGLE’S EYE
Positioned so that the sculpture atop the gate is in
visitors’ view shed, this wayside’s main image is a
close-up, full-color view of this important element—a
permanent symbol of a new nation’s power and pride.
Text and images decode the sculpture; a small tactile
replicates the sculpture for visitors to touch; and they
learn about its preservation by the NPS. Text and images
also convey the sense of history that has passed beneath
the eagle’s eye, and invites visitors to pass beneath
the gate that has served War of 1812 soldiers, Civil War
prisoners, World War II officers, and Coast Guard kids
alike.
