This pilot study is intended to be the first of a series of projects conducted by NIOSH in the area of mine self-escape emergency response and training. This project will conduct a case study on two mines to establish some of the factors necessary for consideration when evaluating the cognitive and physical activities involved in miner self-escape. This study does not sample from a series of mines representative of the United States mining industry and is thus not designed to produce outcomes that will directly result in the development of best practices guidance.
