Family members of individuals at risk for type 2 diabetes. Participants will be recruited through a
professional recruiting firm using a Spanish-language screening instrument.

All participants will receive $75 in the form of a gift card as a show of appreciation for their participation.
Recruiting firms have indicated that $75 is the current standard minimum amount needed as a show of
appreciation for general audiences participation in focus groups.

CDC's National DPP offers a proven, group-based lifestyle intervention to prevent and reduce the onset of
type 2 diabetes. CDC is working to expand the National DPP to meet the needs of the millions of
Americans at high risk for type 2 diabetes. The current effort seeks to confirm that messages previously
developed by CDC are clear, salient, appealing, and persuasive to Hispanic audiences in order to ensure
future communication efforts are successful in getting Hispanics to join lifestyle change programs.

If current trends continue, as many as 1 in 3 Americans will have diabetes by the year 2050. Hispanics are
among the groups with the highest diabetes burden. The goal of CDC's National DPP is for more than 15
million individuals to take part in the lifestyle intervention program by 2050. Testing messages to assure
they resonate with Hispanic audiences is imperative to program success.
