Adults ages 18 years to 75 or older in four major metropolitan areas in the United States. Participants will
be recruited from commercial market research firms. See Attachments A, B and E for
additional details.

Incentives result in better show rates and lower recruiting fees. Therefore, the incentive recommended for
this project is $40 per participant. For additional justification, please see Attachment B.

Radiation is a highly technical topic, and is often misunderstood by the public, as well as many
professional audiences. To address this need, CDC’s Radiation Studies Branch has created a series of
infographics as a communication tool for the public to help them better understand technical concepts
related to radiation and protective actions that may be issued following a radiation emergency. These
infographics will be used to support existing website content and develop future content and training.

These new infographics will be used in a new redesign of RSB's website. This research will assist in
ensuring the infographics are designed in a way that meets information needs effectively, and will also
identify ways emergency communicators can use these infographics with the public. Events in
Fukushima, Japan highlighted the need to develop innovative strategies, like infographics, that
communicate technical information on radiation in a way that reaches the public.
