“I work for a company that cleans buildings. We put in long hours every night after the businesses close up.
Lately, I have not been feeling very well but I’m afraid to stay home because I need the money.
“I think that the cleaning chemicals we use are causing my health problems but I’m not sure. I’d like to talk to my boss about how to protect myself, but I don’t speak English.
My family needs the money but if I get sick and can’t work. I wish there were someone I could talk to about this.

But getting hurt on the job can put everything at risk.
Is there anything you can do to protect yourself and your family from unhealthy or even dangerous work conditions?

“I work as a roofer and I’m busy all the time. This is good because it means more money for me and my friends. But sometimes we have to work too fast because they need us on another job.
“When we work fast we can’t always be as careful as we’d like. Last week, one of my co-workers fell off a roof because he was working too fast – he hurt himself very badly.
I’ve heard there is equipment that can protect you from falling off the roof but I don’t know what it is or where to get it. I like working hard but I don’t want to be a cripple for life.”

WOMAN (OC) (ON CAMERA)
“When I started working at my job, I was very happy. But then my supervisor started saying things to me that were not right for a married man to say. He said he liked my hair and that my eyes were very pretty. “Then he started touching me when he was inspecting my work.
But I have friends here and they told me, “you don’t have to put up with this, you can do this or that.” So I went to look for help and I learned to protect myself.
Well, if I had known then what I know now I would have come here to the consulate and they would have helped me.

Story #6: Consequences to family after an injury/disability/time away from work
I work in a meat packing company. The pay is good, but the work is hard and the lines run very fast. My arms get very sore and sometimes they just give out, but I keep going, because that’s my job, right?
I started to get pain in my fingers, wrists and shoulders. Every morning I have to massage my hands because they are stiff.
If this continues I’m afraid I won’t be able to work anymore. Is there anything I can do?

“My husband works very hard – sometimes ten to twelve hours a day. The job he does can be very dangerous because he is working around a lot of heavy machinery all the time.
“He never complains but I know that he’s worried about some of the things that go on at work. Sometimes the boss tells him to do things that he knows are not safe. He has seen some of his friends get very badly hurt. One was even killed. ‘I have to do what I have to do,’ he tells me.
“ I want him to be safe but I don’t know how to help him.”
