Testing health messages in STEADI older adult fall prevention materials among caregivers

Population includes informal and formal caregivers who care for older adults (age 65+) outside of an
institutional setting. Participants will be recruited by the contractor via telephone (see script). Contractor
will work from existing lists of potential focus group participants, supplemented by cold calling residents.

Participants in this project will receive $75 in remuneration given to them upon completion of their
participation. This is based on the substantial burden incurred, particularly in terms of time. Recent focus
groups with caregivers have used similar incentive rates ($75 by Kosa, et al. 2011; $50 plus taxi vouchers
for transportation by Boughtwood, et al. 2011; $50 plus child care services by Gittleman and Pomerantz
2011; and $50 plus dinner and child care by McKee, et al. 2010). (see Appendix J-Project Description)

The Division of Unintentional Injury has developed a toolkit called STEADI (Stopping Elderly Accidents,
Deaths, & Injuries), to help healthcare providers use fall prevention in their practices. We want to expand
the toolkit to include messaging for the caregivers of older adults, and plan to use focus groups for the
development of the messaging and materials. Messages to be tested include: STEADI logo, home fall
prevention checklist, things you can do to prevent falls, and fall risk checklist (see Appendices F, G, H)
