Operating railroad equipment while being distracted by the use of electronic devices (e.g., cell phones, game consoles, personal computers, etc.) is known to be a factor in some accidents/incidents and suspected of being the cause of many others in the railroad industry. The proposed study will survey the extent and nature of electronic distraction among certain groups of railroad employees. FRA willl use the information collected to develop necessary countermeasures (e.g., suitable regulations, educational programs, public relations messaging, and collaborative programs with the railroad industry) to enhance rail safety and minimize the risk of electronic device distraction by railroad workers.
