Demonstrating compliance with air
quality regulations requires the use of air pollution monitors
which meet requirements of either reference or equivalent methods
as set forth in 40 CFR Part 53. Manufacturers of new monitors must
submit written applications to EPA which demonstrate conformance
with reference and equivalent method requirements such as
measurement accuracy, precision, specificity, and freedom from
measurement interferences. Accordingly, the primary type of
collection is an application for EPA-designation of a method for
ambient air pollution measurement. The information being collected
via the application is a detailed description of the candidate
instrument and its ability to meet the 40 CFR Part 53
requirements.
